So far, in terms of search interface, Google has done the better job because it focuses only on search, while Yahoo tries to integrate the search interface in their design, having a heavier header & stuff, too many images. By the way, there is a legend which says that Google's interface is so simple because Larry & Sergey didn't know HTML :P I think the real battle is regarding the usability.
