However, you can also add defragmentation programs to the list of utilities that can help with performance. File fragmentation can often be the cause for a slow PC, and many people don't recognize this or take steps to combat it. IMHO the free defraggers are not comparable to a proper commercial defragger in terms of functionality and performance. Over the last 2 months, I have been trying out the different free defraggers, and across the board, the commercial ones have shown more stability, faster defrags and better options. From the ones I have tested, Diskeeper Pro is the best of the lot for power home users. Its not free, but has great features and performance. You can try out the evaluation version from their website if you are interested. As for messing around with the registry, always make a backup of the registry before you decide to play with it. It has saved my hide on more than one occasion. That said, I am quite skpetical of 'cure-it-all' programs that claim to clean up the registry and fix all your PC problems.
