When I was still on Windows 98, I remember downloading something off of Softpedia that made it look like Windows XP. Unfortunately, it never worked quite right on my machine. I can't seem to find it now though.

Good to know that Microsoft has still got a huge database of fans and supporters.

Otherwise I will stick to my point :P

I most definitely beg to differ. Vista has DX10 (a huge thing for a Flight Sim buff like myself) and a search that is faster than even apple's newest search engine! I know that there is a much longer list but I only get to use Vista for about an hour a week during class when I can't play around with it (much).

If you ask me, if Microsoft didn't support so well old operating systems like XP, we weren't having this discussion. Unlike others companies that don't give any thought on compatibility, Microsoft not only built this good new version of Windows, they even updated XP so that it wasn't such a big jump. A lot of vista security enhancement, tools and developers frameworks were released to work with XP...I'm not saying they didn't need to support, but they certainly didn't need to make XP so powerful (SP2 really shows that).

From a developers point-of-view, Windows Vista is all about developers (developers, developers, developers, remember?). .NET3 integration (WPF for instance) is so nice, its really a new platform worth exploring.

Hi DJ,

I would really disagree with you here. Do you think Microsoft would come up with a product and that with an operating system which can be just achieved by using the transformation pack ?

I guess most of us don't understand the technology here. Vista was never suppose to work on a basic hardware so if you have a machine which low configuration and you still try vista and say ah its so slow...its your machine not the OS.

Just installing service pack and dot net framework and transformation pack will make XP like vista? Pardon me you get little close to the feel of it.

Vista is more than an operating system...the only mistake Microsoft did was releasing it at time when not many were ready. You have to have a high configuration to use vista...if you don't, then don't use it at all.

And yeah nobody begs to differ...The point is that we just don't agree.

I am not against the use of Vista but am just very much disappointed. I have used Windows Vista since its Beta 1 release to Final version and in all this time it did not quite much attract me towards it.

Probably by the time Microsoft introduces something in new in Windows Vista, we will be close to the release of Vienna and there we will have one more topic to discuss then.

I have tried Vista Transformation Pack...Vista isn't just an interface, it also differs in performance...Yes you are right Windows XP was a new experience after 98...let time pass, you will see the potential...I think Vista came so much early like Playstation 3.

Microsoft has some new things to introduce in Vista that will unleash the potential of Vista in next few months.

Bro try using it, it causes an addiction so that you forget XP...and I agree SP3 of XP has same performance as Vista but there are many other things that matter.

Of course I follow CNet and take them seriously to the extent that I can and obviously Windows Vista does have new features and applications (They can't just change the interface of Windows XP and release it as a new OS)

But the point here is that the feature change log of XP to Vista is just not as enrich as that of Win 2000 to XP or Win 98 to XP.

Plus you need to have a solid hardware graphics card to experience the aero theme and style.

Just get a copy of Vista Transformation Pack and install XP Service Pack 3 along with .NET Framework 3.0 and I would love to see how much the final product differs from the original Windows Vista package.

Man do you follow CNet? let me tell you, Vista Aero works on WDDM (parallel Hardware Processing in G.P.U), other new things are WPF, DirectX10! Ultimate Extras, Shadow Copy, Ready Boost, and much more...also a lot of development facilities for developers.

If you understand the above then these are the things that dominate vista an differ it from XP. all above relate to potentials Visual Studio 2008 and specially Microsoft XNA framework

Oh well not all Windows Vista users are hardcore gamers. Direct X 10 is for users who want high detail graphics in gaming especially.

Plus there is already an alpha version of Direct X 10 for Windows XP. You can probably expect the final version somewhere over in 2008.
