How To Reveal Hidden Passwords in Firefox and IE

Its almost impossible to remember usernames and passwords for all those websites that users visit daily so what mainly users do is that they use the password manager feature of browsers like Internet Explorer and Firefox to save their passwords. The password manager then automatically fills the password form of a website whenever you wish to login however this stored password is in asterisk (*****) and is hidden.

There is a trick for both Internet Explorer and Firefox that can help you reveal the passwords behind those asterisk or you can even simply see a list of all passwords saved by IE or Firefox in their program memory.

Reveal Asterisk Password in Internet Explorer

To reveal the hidden password behind asterisk in IE you need a utility called AsterWin IE that will show you the current password on your IE screen hidden behind asterisk. Just run the application when you are on a website’s login page and it will automatically scan and reveal the hidden password.

In case you want the list of all passwords saved by IE just use IE PassView which is another useful utility made by the creators of AsterWin IE.

Reveal Asterisk Password in Firefox

Revealing the hidden passwords in Firefox is pretty much simple. Just copy/paste the following javascript when in your address bar whenever you are on a site with a login form and it will display the password behind asterisk right away.

javascript: var p=r(); function r(){var g=0;var x=false;var x=z(document.forms);g=g+1;var w=window.frames;for(var k=0;k<w.length;k++) {var x = ((x) || (z(w[k].document.forms)));g=g+1;}if (!x) alert(’Password not found in ‘ + g + ‘ forms’);}function z(f){var b=false;for(var i=0;i<f.length;i++) {var e=f[i].elements;for(var j=0;j<e.length;j++) {if (h(e[j])) {b=true}}}return b;}function h(ej){var s=”;if (ej.type==’password’){s=ej.value;if (s!=”){prompt(’Password found ‘, s)}else{alert(’Password is blank’)}return true;}}

To get a list of all the passwords saved by Firefox just navigate to Tools >> Options and click the Security tab. In the security tab click the Show Passwords button to reveal a list of all hidden passwords.

Pretty much easy and yet very useful.

Damm !!! Show password in firefox is so simple. Thanks for sharing this Dj, I am sure not gonna store any password from now on just to save time on my office computer. I never knew firefox can be so low in security :( , when it comes to user privacy

Raj

Never Know about these tricks. Thanks DJ :)

I always try not to save my passwords on the computer. If its that easy for to get at the passwords it should be that easy for a hacker to write a trojan or virus to do that same. That’s why I came up with The Combination Lock Password Formula.

You never know who or what might try to get at your info.

Omar

Ok so how do we hide the password once again in Firefox? I used the javascript trick above, and ever since it reveals ALL of my normally hidden passwords when I’m logging into to something. How do we undo this?

david
