iPod Touch is better than iPhone? Here is Why

I am feeling really excited right now as I am holding the youngest family member of Apple iPod Series in my hand. iPod Touch is still one of those new gadgets which have marked revolution in the Tech industry in terms of low price and good quality.

It really feels great to be the owner of the Apple iPod Touch as it is still one of the most talked about gadgets. I wish I could shoot a live video to show you my experience but I guess you would have already seen a lot of iPod Touch videos on YouTube.

Originally my plan was to get an unlocked iPhone here in Pakistan but soon changed my mind and bought the iPod Touch instead. Here are some reasons I would like to give in my defense for preferring the iPod Touch over an unlocked iPhone.

  • Lightweight - Thats true! though the difference of mass is just of some grams but still iPod Touch beats iPhone because its more lightweight and easy to handle.
  • More Slim -The iPhone has a 12mm thickness while the iPod Touch is only 8mm thick. Your hands will definitely feel the difference.
  • No Unlock Required - This is the biggest reason why I preferred iPod Touch over the iPhone. iPod Touch does not come locked with any service provider and can be used easily out of the box while on the other hand everyone knows that the iPhone comes exclusively for AT&T users.
  • Better Screen - Though both of the gadgets come with a cool scratch-less screen, the thing that makes iPod Touch better is its better video resolution and response time.
  • $100 Cheaper than iPhone - iPod Touch comes with a price of $299 which is $100 cheaper than the iPhone. There is 99.9% probability that you will have a phone already. Then why waste extra $100?

Please remember that this post compares iPod Touch and an Unlocked iPhone (not a normal iPhone) so before bombarding any comments like iPhone is the best ever, You suck DJ please keep that in mind.

    The iTouch is yet another great addition to the Apple gadget family. Can’t complain about the features, however I cannot distinguish the difference in resolution. I would still prefer the mobile version of the device as it supports calls.

      the i phone does have some more fartures than the itouch, but in my opinion get the itouch. although it may not have a camera, calling or texting, there is alot more you can do with the touch. plus,my aunt has the iphone and the camera SUCKS, also the internet doesn’t work all the times, to me it is the same as useing wi-fi. if u wanted to buy the i phone and store alot of things on it, i bet that it will slow it down,that is what happened 2 my friend. comparing the itouch to the iphone, i’d say that the i touch has more storage.

      The only addition to the iPhone thats different than the Touch is that its camera can have a flash, and you can make audio calls. But everything else: display, video chat, games, apps, voice control, voice memos, EVERYTHING basically is either better or the same as the iPhone on the Touch.

        Uh… so does the iPod Touch. It comes with apps, not to mention their are thousand of apps just like the ones you can pay for but free in the App Store. And you can access the Store straight from the iPod Touch.

    Nirmal – Brother I have mentioned already in the post that the I have compared the iPod Touch and an Unlocked iPhone. iPhone is definitely better than the iPod Touch in some aspects but if you are located outside the US then you should get the iPod Touch instead of getting an Unlocked iPhone.

    Basharat First of all dude you need to understand that iPod Touch is not only an MP3 player and iPhone is not only a phone. Both are high tech gadgets which diversify your experience. They are not meant only for music and calls.

    I have a PSP, an iTTouch and I wanted to know whether I should have get the iPhone instead of the iTouch. I like it but it would have been fun to phone my mates with the iPhone and show off.

    You absolutely right man. What you listed are the exact same reasons I’m opting for a Touch over an iPhone. The only difference is, I would have placed the unlock requirement at the top of the list. Imagine paying an extra 100 bucks (full price) for a complete product only to have it unlocked and brought down to less than 87% of it’s true potential (which btw, I repeat, you paid for in full). The heck with that. I’d rather just wait until it comes out full swing in Pk than to buy an iPod that turns into an iBrick. That tirade aside, I’m looking for some advice.

    I’m based in Karachi. If you’re aware of any outlets around Clifton or Defence that sell the Touch, could you let me know? I checked out Beliscity and a few other but they don’t specify which firmware version the Touch they’re selling has. I’m a little particular about this because my primary reason is the Wi-Fi and built-in Safari browser feature. Also, how do you update your Touch? Hit me back.

    Thats where I bought it from and it takes 1 day to deliver around anywhere in Pakistan.

    The firmware is pin pack means if you buy it now it will be probably 1.1.2 or 1.1.3

    I update my iPod Touch firmware through iTunes which is as easy as hell.

    But an unlocked iPhone has a camera, speakers, external volume controls, and built-in mic for VOIP like Skype. That’s worth the extra $100 but I have a iPod touch because iPhone isn’t available in Korea yet.

    Folks, There Is No Such Thing As One Hardware Being Better Than Another, It always depends on who is using it and why.

    iPod Touch 1st Gen?

    The best Mp4 player a teenager can have, not very useful for grown-ups who have a job which constantly needs a phone. Though It does’t have speakers or a mic, it still have one major feature… The ability to Jailbreak which gives you options to customize it and get as many free apps as you want.

    iPod Touch 2nd Gen?

    Though it has the add-ons of speakers and volume buttons, it is currently impossible to Jailbreak which forces you to and adds another 50 bucks to the already more expensive price compared to the 1st Gen. Also thinner and Lighter.

    iPhone 3G?

    The iPhone is better than the iPod Touch to be used as a job tool but lacks many things that the Blackberry and the other phones don’t… For example forwarding of messages and recording videos. And also not to forget the expensive price for the hardware and the carrier charges.

    Personally I find 1st Gen more suitable as it all depends on who is using it and why?

      Unfortunately, Your post is somewhat wrong. There is an ability to jailbreak everything from ipod touch to iphone 3G S. I jailbreak all the time with all my devices and the only real reason for jailbreaking is to download hacked apps

        This is actually probably the best differential between the three devices at the time! Nowadays things have gotten too complicated with iPhone 4S and whatnot.. but I stick to my Blackberry + iPod Touch.

    Thanks for the article. But you said iPod touch is just $100 cheaper than iPhone… I think thats not correct for Pakistan. As far as I know, iPod Touch 8GB is available for Rs. 22K but iPhone 3G 8GB is for Rs.52K which is more than double.

    Can you clarify this?

      Actually this article is dated back an year ago and till then, the prices and model of the iPhone and iPod Touch were quite different.

      As of now, an unlocked iPhone is more expensive than the iPod Touch.

    Hey all i checked your comments and i find that the ipod touch is not worth to buy when the iphone is only 100$ extra , try collecting this extra 100$ to get the iphone cause the iphone has many extra imortant stuff that an ipod touch doesnt have such as a camera , phone and applications that doesnt work on ipod touch . there are many applications that needs the iphone to work on , ipod touch is an ipod but in a new and good way that apple created . but iphone in a phone that has everything + the ipod so its like u got them both ! so i advice u all to buy iphone and not ipod touch .

    I just started using the new iPod touch, 32gb and trust me, there's nothing better! The wifi capability is just too good to be true. And the new touch supports skype which makes it an extremely likable devise. I love my iPod touch!

    you can call with an iTouch…you just need a Wi-Fi, mic and headset (one jack) which are now supported on OS 3.0 (2g) and Skype app. Soon they will release an iTouch with in-built camera like they've done it with iNano.

    Ok as a person who owns an 2 ipod touches id say they are better. My brother owns an iphone and hes gotten 2 or 3 different ones. theres a downside as one of the ipod touches i have has a messed up screen. some of the keys and areas on the screen wont work. Now dont get me wrong, id LOVE to send it ti apple and say “Fix it plz” but the problem there is, i got it from my gf's sisters x boyfriend. I actually got both of them for free and they had bought them for 500 dollars each over ebay. so i have no warranty.

    The other ipod touch however, works ok (Keyword is OK)… For some reason, i cant update to 3.1.2 firmware. it gives me error 1611 but i have no problem restoring back to 3.0.. i just cant go any higher than 3.0 :(

    Another thing i wish there was on the ipod touch would be a camera. IDK why it doesn't have a camera… it registers as one when i plug it into my PC it says *Name: Apple Ipod – “Camera Detected” <—- wtf? i dont have a camera on this…

    but all in all from what ive seen happen to ipod tuch and iphone id give these ratings

    IPhone <–> 8.5/10
    Ipod Touch <–> 9/10

    Not the biggest difference because they are both pretty defective.

    sorry for double posting but id also like to add another rating to the list. I have a 2nd generation ipod touch as well. (http://www.mrgadget.com.au/uploaded_images/geck…) and that ipod has been in the pool for a half hour, washed in the washer 6 times and dried in the dryer 5 times (Dried once with a hairdryer as well) and to be honest, ive never seen an electronic withstand that much abuse so my rating is

    2nd Generation Ipod: 10/10

    you can hook your phone up with 3g internet which provides internet as long as you have service on your phone.. Also device takes pictures and lets you upload them thru webpages..
    If you wanna go little furter in programming you can control your home computer thru your iphone as well.. But i dont like to get stucked with WI-Fi that why i have iphone :)

    In an ipod touch, I am mostly interested in reading pdf documents and listening to audio files. but i am not sure about the procedure of transferring / copying pdf /audio files from a laptop to ipod touch. Is it very difficult or an average person can manage it easily on his own? So, my question is basically about the transferring /coping procedure of pdf /audio files from laptop to ipod touch.

    I love my Ipod touch im always on it weather its the web or IM i love playing on it and altho it is simlair to an Iphone i prefer i Ipod Touch..I had an unlocked Iphone with T-mobile and they charged me extra fees and it just wasnt worth it ;)

    I have been reading a lot of reviews on this topic of iPhone vs. iPod touch and I have yet to make a choice. I have a 3rd generation iPod and want to upgrade to the touch but then I also want the iPhone unless it's not worth it. I love to take notes in meetings and the thought of not having to lug around a portfolio with paper in it and just type on the iphone is a refreshing idea. But im still at a loss for words. As for your posting of this article…I like it a lot and it will help me on my quest for the iphone or the touch. Thankyou!!

      Yes you can, wifi is free with I-touch which I truly love about this feature. So you stream from any hot wi-fi-spot and call anyone or text using a application such as skype or aim.

    Well, ipod touch and iphone are similar devices in the aspect of playing music, taking pictures, video recording and playing music. There are few differences between them like you can’t make a phone call or use the GPS feature and that make the Ipod touch unable to use applications that depends on them in order to work (unless there is a Wi-Fi network).
    The different in the price am not sure though because i bought mine as installments with Rogers in Canada but i am 100% satisfied with my Iphone 3gs 16GB and dont see any reason to buy an ipod while the iphone combine them both in 1 device.

    i have a totally stupid question! i have never used an ipod before and planning to buy 1, so i live in PAKISTAN and most of my music library is pirated will i be able to play that in y ipod touch. Secondly will i have to buy the apps online or is there any ‘other way’ to have them.

    Please remember that i will be using this phone in Pakistan.

    Also one more thing. The iphones was recently discovered by a security team that it tracks your every location and stores it on your comp during sync. So iPod is superior in a way.
