Yesterday I asked a friend of mine to compile a set of music videos and mail me the archive. After downloading and extracting the compressed RAR archive I was surprised to see that the music videos were compiled into RMVB format about which I had heard before but did not know how to play it.
Little help from Jake Ludington did the job and I was able to play the movie easily. I am writing this post for users who want to know about the RMVB media format and want to know how to play RMVB files.
What is a RMVB file?
RMVB is a RealMedia Variable Bitrate file. This is one of the newer formats from Real for publishing video files, which is quickly becoming a popular format for various movie titles because of smaller file sizes and lower bitrates with exceptional quality compared to DivX.
How to Play RMVB file?

There are two possible ways to play RMVB files. Either you can download RealPlayer to play RMVB files or the best option would be to use Real Alternative which plays back RealMedia files outside of RealPlayer.

Do you realize that you are accepting the fact in public that you downloaded the file from a torrent in an illegal way ?
If you downloaded this illegally (which is obvious), admitting it in written form is not a very good idea.
Apart from that, nice post, and I might find it useful myself
I wrote a similar tutorial to extract .daa files (another popular format in torrent networks).
You guys are right. It can be a bit dangerous so I just rephrased the story a bit
@Sumesh - Thanks for sharing the tutorial.
Re-phrasing does not help. Your screenshot clearly shows a recent Hollywood movie for which there should be no legal copy in rmvb format!
Cleverly took care of that too!
Well, no real comment as situation speaks for itself! I think we bloggers should be really careful online. Now on the actual topic I think Realplyer Alternative is probably a better option (it is also included in codec packs such as VCP and K-Lite Mega Codec Pack)
