10 Reasons to Download and Try Ubuntu 8.04 LTS

Finally the long-awaited Linux distribution has come to life which aims to make life easier for all of the Linux and non-Linux users out there. The new Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron promises to provide a free and open-source platform which is not only packed with latest softwares but is also extremely easy to use too.

Last time I made a post on 10 Reasons Why Linux Ubuntu is Better than Windows which sparked a very controversial debate. This time I am trying my best not to target Windows rather just review Ubuntu 8.04 in itself and give you 10 reasons that will make you download and try Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

1. Long Term Support - After Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake, this is the next LTS (Long Term Support) release which means that long term support will be provided for the desktop edition (upto 3 years) and also for the server edition (upto 5 years).

2. Install Ubuntu within Windows - This new release gives you the option to install Ubuntu along side Windows all thanks to Wubi. No need to format your hard-disk for Linux now.

3. Operate more Safe & Secure - Even though Linux is already considered safe as compared to Windows, Hardy has been programmed to make it more secure and private.

4. Try it Live - Much like any other Ubuntu release, you can try Hardy Heron without even installing it or doing any changes to your current OS. This may seem an old feature to Linux users but for Windows users it can provide a whole new experience.

5. Search with Tracker - This new release of Ubuntu comes integrated with the new versin of Tracker which is a search system for Linux. This way you can find all your files and apps just like in Windows Vista.

6. New and Free Software - Hardy Heron also lets you taste some of the new applications and softwares for Linux. While open-source and free apps may not be a new thing for Linux users, what makes Hardy unique is that it comes integrated with all of these brilliant applications.

7. User Friendly Linux Distro - Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron boasts to be the most up-to-date and user-friendly Linux distribution. If you are used to operating Windows, there is no reason why you will find operating Ubuntu 8.04 any difficult.

8. Compiz 3D Effects - Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron has more to offer than just simple 3D Effects. Experience Compiz from within Hardy like never before. Work and browse in a 3D virtual world with some of the never-seen-before effects and animations.

9. Universal Device Support - In Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, every device like PSP, iPod, MP3 player etc works out of the box. You don’t need to worry about device drivers or device compatibility issues anymore as Hardy is there to take complete care of it.

10. Learn and Teach - Everyone uses Windows and Mac is too expensive for everyone to afford so give Ubuntu 8.04 a try. It is a new operating system with powerful enough features to compete with Windows. Learn it, teach it and spread the word.

Thats my say on why you should download and try Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. I myself strongly believe that living in a world without Windows is just impossible but there is always room to try something new and better. Especially with Wubi now you can experience Windows and Ubuntu side by side.

Download Ubuntu and Give it a try. It is the operating system that will power the future of home desktops.

I’m dying to try out Ubunutu. I hope I get my CD next weekend! :)

The most important reason I see that is not listed above is that Ubuntu has a short release cycle. With only 6 months between each new version of Ubuntu, Ubuntu can build and make available applications long before Windows or Mac.

Can this be found to run alongside MacOSX?

Every device works out of the box - big claim and not true. A lot of things will work ootb and nearly all with tweaking but not all. I’ve certainly got a usb wireless adapter at home which doesn’t.

i’ll try to get my hands on it as sooon as possible :D

This distro is getting better month after month. The LTS support will appeal most of the system admins to check out Ubuntu more.

I could counter these silly non important reasons with 100 reasons not to use Linux :D ;)

Looking forward to trying it, haven’t taken the time to yet.

!!Living in a world without Windows is just impossible!!
I think this is wrong, I have lived in a world without windows since
1996. I support UBUNTU 100%.

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 about 5 days ago and so far it has been great. It runs better and faster than Windows and installing programs and applications is very simple. This is my first Linux experience and, IMO, it is not hard to learn.

The Wubi installation doesnt seem to work for me. After installation and restart when i try to start Ubuntu, it gives an error saying “Upper Memory” and my Bios settings are reset.
