WattOS, Lightweight Linux Operating System

Posted by Saad Hamid on July 9, 2008

If you are big fan of Linux then you would definitely want out to try this new Ubuntu-based Linux flavor known as WattOS.

WattOS is a remaster of Ubuntu Linux in a lightweight fashion that runs quickly with low system requirements. The operating system will run on low power computers and recycled systems keeping you working and playing with all the features you expect.

Currently it is heavy under development and as of now only the alpha build of this OS is available for download and can be run on a Live CD. In future, three desktop versions of WattOS will be available:

  1. wattOS – The core desktop system using a fully featured Gnome desktop.
  2. mWattOS – Milliwatt a smaller desktop system using XFCE as the core interface. (known as mWOS).
  3. µWattOS – Microwatt an even smaller desktop utilizing a minimal desktop GUI or command line. Ideal for appliances, small systems, kiosks, or old computers.

Some screens of the alpha version can be seen below:

Intresting.

Thought I worry about the Microsoft code that might have made it into the kernel and user-space.

Yesterday night I tried WattOS and it worked fine.
I disagree with what was written on the site linked here by the second commenter.
I am an Ubuntu user with 6 months of experience.

Very interesting, I’ll have to keep an eye on this one thanks.

You ARE joking about the MS code in Linux right?? Althought Microsoft has just patented the PageUp and PageDown keys (http://discuss.itwire.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=6426#p23928) so I guess there could be some patents violated, whether they are actually enforceable is another matter.

The idea of MS code in Linux is just as aberrant as the idea of MS code in Unix.
Patenting Page Up and Page Down is like patenting riding a bike. Would you ?
