How to Update iPod Touch to Firmware 2.0 for Free

Apple has pushed the new iPod Touch Firmware 2.0 to iTunes. All iPod Touch users can upgrade to this latest firmware by paying a one-time fee of $9.25.

iPhone users, however, get to upgrade to firmware 2.0 absolutely free of cost. As I find this kind of unfair on part of Apple to charge only iPod Touch users, so I am going to help you upgrade iPod Touch to firmware 2.0 absolutely for free.

ipod20firm

Just follow the steps below and soon you will be having an updated iPod Touch 2.0 absolutely for free.

  1. Download iTunes from Here.
  2. Hold Shift and click Restore.

The iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw firmware can be downloaded from any of the mirrors below. It is the complete stable and final iPod Touch Firmware 2.0 (5A347) and has been checked and tested.

    Hi All

I installed and it did updated firmware and does provide 2.0 interface.

However somehow I am locked out of iTunes Store access from iPod (even the Itunes store button disappears).

Finally when I installed apps they were initially properly synced to iPod. However after a period of time, iTunes refuses to synch apps and the existing apps on iPod fail to start.

I think apple must be using iTunes to validate whether license for iPod firmware was purchased or not, and locks you out if it was not.

Will I lose Installer.app and all other stuffs if I update to firmware 2.0 ?

    • Priscilla says:

Yes, you will. I upgraded on my Jailbroken iPod and the Installer app was gone. And now I am trying to find a way to get it back. other than that… everything else is really cool.

  • Daruba says:

Although I was willing to pay for the upgrade, I simply could not buy it because Apple don’t let some countries buy stuff using iTunes (like Aruba). My U$D visa seems to be worth nothing @ Apple.

Thank you so much for making this available! It works just great, and it’s a beautiful upgrade overall.

    plz help.

    • RyanC says:

You have to connect your iPod Touch to your computer. A screen will then come up showing your iPod’s info. If it doesn’t, then look over on the right of the iTunes window, and under the devices section. There will be an option with your iPod’s name. Click it. A little of center will be the “restore” button in question.

  • Georgia says:

  • ipod touch fan says:

Did anyone tried to jailbreak their ipod with ziphone with itunes 7.7? Did it work?

    • victor says:

      Hey it does work.

You just have to restore the iPod and then just open the Ziphone folder and for the iPod is the second choice and it did work fine.

  • LG says:

Thanks for the information, I greatly appreciate it!

For those of you having trouble, after you download the new iTunes and the ipsw file from one of the addresses given in the original post, plug in your iPod touch. When iTunes opens, the restore button is located on the main tab where you would sync the files from your library. You want to hold down the shift key when you click on the restore button and a window should open asking for the ipsw file. It’ll work and tell you that the iPod is being restored to its factory settings but then you’ll see all the new features afterwards on the iPod screen. The only bummer is that all your files have to be re-synced but that’s just a minor issue.

  • Mael says:

Thank you so much. This really works. My daughter has one Ipod Touch and I upgraded hers for USD 10. Not willing to pay another USD 10 for my Touch that I took this suggestion. The total time is still faster even if you to have to do a re-sysnced.

  • dezzigner says:

Cool, it’s work on my 16Gb ipod touch.
I have been tried to upgrade to 2.0 with many video guides from Youtube but they all craps!!
For Mac user you have to hold down the shift key when you click on the restore button.
Waiting for jailbreaking 2.0 and add installer.. :)
    Thanks dude!!!

  • Anthony says:

    Thanks for that
It’s working well most the time, but my iPod randomly resets itself when i go to load an app. Do you know why?
By the way, I downloaded from RapidShare.

  • Fan says:

I’ve do it with Uploaded.to but when I click restore and click the firmware It says ”error 1403” what should I do?

    • Adrienne says:

Yeah, that happened to me too. I’ve tried it 3 times, and error 1403 keeps popping up, and I really don’t want to buy it from iTunes. Does anyone here have a solution?

  • Jake says:

Awsome load speed in west america will update on how it works

  • bel says:

bluff. i added the file, it told me “unknown error” in itunes 7.7.

  • ant says:

far from a bluff, worked great, instructions are very easy. Thanks.

  • dezzigner says:

    Revision for my comment
For Mac user you have to hold down the alt/option key when you click on the restore button.

  • philip says:

    This actually works
    thanks man
it took me two hours and i live in norway

  • Leora says:

When I click restore (like restore to factory settings??), will it erase everything on my ipodtouch? (such as music, ect.)

  • tyrone says:

    works like a charm thanks

  • Alyssa says:

    Bel,
The same thing just happened to me.
    Idk why.
I put my iPod in recovery mode,
    Downloaded the file.
Pressed shift and clicked restore clicked the file and then it said unknown error!?!
    Help :(

  • Josh Myers says:

    HELP!

I upgraded to the official Apple iPod Touch 2.0 software through iTunes and it worked fine for the first two days. After that I keep getting message saying that an “unknown error 0xE8000035 has occured”! I can’t use my iPod or sync. I’ve tried restoring and hard restarting. I’ve killed the battery twice and nothing works! HELP ME!

  • Mafaz says:

hey, for tose of you who have problems with iTunes, just go to iTunes and click on ‘Restore’, this will restore your iPod to factory settings, since you already have the 2.0 ver. iTunes will download it for free and you will have the actual (Official) update without having to pay anything

  • mac b says:

thanks very much you saved me money works very well

  • Akis says:

Thank you very much my friend. Works fine

  • Eddy says:

For the person who asked about Installer on 2.0 read this… http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

  • andreas says:

i cam get it work?? help me plzz..

  • cameron says:

Yo, dude! thnx man it works so fucking nicely, u da man!!

  • ddgv says:

well hi there… for the ppl asking if there was installer… well yes but there is pwnage involved first (look at the link above me…with the link to the dev team blog) BUT even if there is installer sadly there is NO apps ported to 2.0
this means that none of the apps found in installer and in cydia (alternative to installer) will be able to work in firmware 2.0 … so in bottom line jailbreaking 2.0 does nothing except get you ready for the future apps (hopefully)

  • Deevesh says:

Wats the difference between Pwnage tool and download?

  • Ipodtouch fan says:

Can this be seen as jail breaking an i pod???

  • D-vsh says:

Does this work on i pod touch running on the 1.1.5 version?

i dont understand these directions fully.
how would i do this on a Mac OS X computer, when i already have itunes 7.7 downloaded.
    thanksss

  • James says:

I have newer version 1.1.5 and it won’t let me install the ipsw.
It won’t give me the option to select the ipsw file. Anyone has the same problem.

  • Tadjelynn says:

    16GB iPod Touch
    1.1.4 Jailbroken

Installed this update and it worked perfectly, though lost all jailbroken apps including Installer.app and Cydia. I am able to download apps using iTunes and put them on the iPod. I am not in a wifi area so I haven’t been able to test them, but it looks good so far.

I’m pretty annoyed that it costs another $10 after already paying $20 before, and it also costs for most of the apps. But I guess we get the security of knowing Apple has checked all of these apps and if anything were to happen because of them Apple would warranty the iPod.

Apple = Evil! But there is something attractive in evil.
Damn them for making us want them more! -_^

  • TY says:

i downloaded the file, but i too get the error 1403. What should i do?

Extra mirrors if anyone needs max speed, I’ve uploaded the firmware to rapidshare. If you have dsl, you can just turn off, then turn on your modem after each part so you don’t have to wait. The links are below in 3 parts.

  • et2007c says:

I had experience on two error code 1403 and 1602, error 1403 you need to re-download the another firmware again, error 1602 to uninstll and install iturn again. This update is work, thanks.

    • teaspoon says:

I had these two errors also, but thanks to Et2007c I was able to get past them and update successfully.

I had some long, tense moments when I thought I was stranded between versions, and I had to keep restarting the firmware download — took several tries and over 4 hours (*OMG* that “uploaded.to” mirror site is slow! Try searching for that restore file somewhere else, before using the ones linked on the page.)

But finally, after downloading the firmware twice, and reinstalling iTunes, I updated my iTouch from 1.1.4 to 2.0 — and then let iTunes update it to 2.2.1 — and the process went very smoothly.

After everything was working, I went ahead and did the jailbreak, which is fast and flawless. Now I have the best of both worlds!

This is the correct filename right?
    iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

  • Thanks Saad
i have not yet updated the firmware on iPod but at least there is a ray of hope. and after reading the comments by all users, i am sure it will work with my ipod touch 8GB also.
the only thing that bug me is the merging of the files on windows XP. I found one comment for it in the same blog

Windows XP, use HJSplit ( http://www.freebytesoftware.com/download/hjsplit.zip ) to join the three splitted files…

    Thanks.

  • Hany says:

Hello…I am using iPod 16GB right now…after downloading this file I followed the steps mentioned above, on this site of yours but when I hold shift and press restore and then click the file, an error occurs and my iPod isn’t updated.

Please sir could you help me out in this little problem of mine…I’ll be really thankful to you if you could help me…Bye.

  • Jonathan says:

  • Jonathan says:

Does the iTunes 8 can do this? i have the first generation ipod touch is this compatible with it?

  • Ray says:

Only can be updated by Mac? not through Windows?

  • john says:

    Hey guys!

Somehow its not working on mine. when I do the whole Shift, Tab and restore thing and start updating, it only says that its preparing to restore and after like a minute theres an error and its not able to do so.

Can u tell me what I am wrong? thanks a lot!

  • Ezmyrelda says:

This for the person that purchased the upgrade. Once you purchase it you can put it on as many iPods as you want. The upgrade is attached to a user account NOT an iPod. BTW 2.2 is a great update as it fixes connection issues with WPA/2.

  • Jess says:

    hm.
okay so i uploaded it on one of the links.
and its uploaded to my computer.

    now what do i do??

  • cole says:

Hey anyone i have a little issue. i cant connect to the internet. any ideas? the new software seem to be working just fine but it wnt connect to the internet source anymore. pelase help

    • Bugs says:

      Hi Cole,

May be a stupid point.. but have you reconfigured your wireless access? The upgrade for some, does erase all configurations and you have to do it again.

      Bugs.

  • Bugs says:

Well wanted to thank you for uploading the FW. and thanks to all who have posted their comments. It did help me get thru from 1.1.5 to 2.2 (yes its 2.2 now). there was a scary moment where my iPod Touch just hung and refused to accept any of my commands. after a few nervous minutes it was back up and on to 2.0. I restarted and loaded up iTunes and opted for the upgrade to 2.2. iTunes quickly downloaded the package, but soon enough there was an error “13″ saying it has failed updates. But once again I restarted connected to iTunes and there is was 2.2. I confirmed this on the iPod Touch too.. It says 2.2. its been working fine for the last hr or so. I was able to sync all my songs and pics.

Thanks once again guys. this works like a charm..

    Bugs.

  • Jake says:

Hey I am trying it and I cant figure out how to do it?

    • Bugs says:

      Hi Jake,

I’m quoting the steps mentioned by LG ( almost half a page above).

      *********************************
For those of you having trouble, after you download the new iTunes and the ipsw file from one of the addresses given in the original post, plug in your iPod touch. When iTunes opens, the restore button is located on the main tab where you would sync the files from your library. You want to hold down the shift key when you click on the restore button and a window should open asking for the ipsw file. It’ll work and tell you that the iPod is being restored to its factory settings but then you’ll see all the new features afterwards on the iPod screen. The only bummer is that all your files have to be re-synced but that’s just a minor issue.
      *************************************

Follow this and you should be fine,
      Bugs.

  • Alucard says:

If my iPod touch is Jailbroken would this work? Please need a answer for this question! Am so Puzzled!

    • Audge says:

      Alucard

Yes, if your iPod is jailbroken you can still upgrade it to 2.0 but when you restore it, it will no longer be jailbroken

  • Jack says:

    This works amazing. Thanks.

  • avi says:

Just to let you know I successfully upgraded from 1.1.4 to 2.0 using the tutorial above.

I then connected to iTunes and upgraded to 2.2 with no problems. I now have the new apps and appstore is working fine. I chose not to jailbreak so can’t comment on that

    Thanks for everybody’s help

  • vivian says:

    Hello

I did everything right, but it keeps getting stuck at “Preparing iPod for software update”!

what should I do? is anyone experiencing the same problem?

  • Leigh says:

Does this work with iTunes 8.0?

  • Johnnie Rocket says:

Hey, this worked perfectly for me, I did exactly as the instructions above said, and it seems to have gone great. I even went on to update to version 2.2 and that went smoothly too. It automatically re-synched all the content I had put on the ipod, so I didn’t have to reload all my content, but I haven’t yet checked the WEP codes or other settings. Oh, and I cancelled the re-synch at the version 2.0 bootup, as it will be wiped out again immediately at the 2.2 update. No use in waiting that extra 30 minutes twice. It does take a pretty long time – I have about 8 gigs on my 16GB model and it took around 2 hours start to finish.

Thanks alot, not just for the cost savings, but for the spirit of helping others!

  • Ace says:

Pardon me! but will it work with the latest itunes?

  • ACE says:

and why does it takes forever to restore the new software!?:(

  • madi says:

I ask the same question, will it work for iTunes 8?

  • 33som says:

    It works with itunes 8

  • Codin says:

gosh, I don’t get this… where do i get the firmware? when i press shift, nothing happens

  • kris says:

Hey! every time I try to upgrade my ipod to 2.0 (hold shift and click restore, then select iPod Firmware file) it always says error 1403. I have installed RegCure and done the super long scan many times and fixed the errors but the Error 1403 still comes up!

    Please help me :(

  • confused says:

I hold shift and click on restore, I can’t find the file you told me about, I’ll be expecting an e-mail from you.

  • mrb91 says:

Worked perfectly. Thanks a lot for the link.

  • Farrin says:

After I spent an hour downloading the file, I went into my itunes, held shift and clicked restore, found the file and clicked okay, it said an unknown error occurred.

    Now what? please help!

  • Stefan says:

    It worked! thanks :D

  • Billy says:

Worked like a dream on a Macbook running iTunes 8.0 and first generation 8gb touch… An hour to download from uploaded to then 20 minutes of installation of 2.0 and then iTunes asks if I want to update to 2.2.1 which it does without problems so another 20 minutes of download and the newest firmware is there. Cool

  • Gizelle says:

To those who are getting the Error 1403, please make sure that you’re downloading the whole 222.6 MB file. Sometimes, due to unknown glitch, you tend to download only part of the file thus giving you this error when you restore. I know ’cause it happened to me.

It took me a couple of hours to download (about 2 or 3 hours, I think) but it was worth the wait as I’m able to upgrade my iPod’s software from version 1.1.4 to 2.0. Then I proceeded to upgrade again to version 2.2.1 and this time, iTunes didn’t harass me to pay $9.95 anymore.

You just need a lot of patience on this one but it works. And by the way, you can do this trick even on iTunes 8.0. :)

  • nadeem says:

Can someone help me out? How long does the update process take? Its been saying “preparing iPod for restore” for the longest time now
should it take more then 5 mins?

  • David says:

When I try to install this, I get Error 1604. I tried all the methods of solving it such as delete update.dll, re-install iTunes, and putting the touch into restore/recovery mode but nothing works.

I also tried using a different account and finally a different computer but I still get the same error.

    Any ideas?

  • Chris says:

You can also get this file on torrent sites like the Pirate Bay. For example: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4287908/iPod1_1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

    Downloads a lot faster ..

  • Roman says:

Just to clear this out for everybody, It works on iTunes 8. Use HjSplit to join the parts if you downloaded them off Rapidshare.

And yes it works on Windows too.

Its okay for it to say processing… just wait after about 10-20 mins, it will say that it has been restored.

  • jenny says:

iTunes 7.7 doesn’t work, is it ok if I use iTunes 8?

  • jenny says:

    Hi!
Tried to download this awsome software but it keeps telling me that ‘My ipod could not be restored because the firmwire file is not compatible.’
Is my ipod touch too old to update using your software? Software version is 1.1.5?
