How to Update iPod Touch to Firmware 2.0 for Free

Apple has pushed the new iPod Touch Firmware 2.0 to iTunes. All iPod Touch users can upgrade to this latest firmware by paying a one-time fee of $9.25.

iPhone users, however, get to upgrade to firmware 2.0 absolutely free of cost. As I find this kind of unfair on part of Apple to charge only iPod Touch users, so I am going to help you upgrade iPod Touch to firmware 2.0 absolutely for free.

Just follow the steps below and soon you will be having an updated iPod Touch 2.0 absolutely for free.

  1. Download iTunes from Here.
  2. Hold Shift and click Restore.
  3. Select iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw
  4. Enjoy!

The iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw firmware can be downloaded from any of the mirrors below. It is the complete stable and final iPod Touch Firmware 2.0 (5A347) and has been checked and tested.

Rapidshare mirror (Join parts using this software)

Uploaded.to mirror

Freakshare mirror

Once you download the firmware locally on your PC, follow the steps above to update iPod Touch to Firmware 2.0.

    Hi All

I installed and it did updated firmware and does provide 2.0 interface.

However somehow I am locked out of iTunes Store access from iPod (even the Itunes store button disappears).

Finally when I installed apps they were initially properly synced to iPod. However after a period of time, iTunes refuses to synch apps and the existing apps on iPod fail to start.

I think apple must be using iTunes to validate whether license for iPod firmware was purchased or not, and locks you out if it was not.

Dubai, UAE (no iPhones 2.0 sold or imported here)

For those downloading rapidshare parts use HJSplit to join them in windows.

Will I lose Installer.app and all other stuffs if I update to firmware 2.0 ?

    • Priscilla January 3, 2009, 2:13 pm

Yes, you will. I upgraded on my Jailbroken iPod and the Installer app was gone. And now I am trying to find a way to get it back. other than that… everything else is really cool.

  • Dam July 13, 2008, 8:52 am

hey thanks for this … but .. i press shift and nothing happens.. Where or when its supposed to ask for this .ipsw file ??
    thanks for any suggestion

    • Daniela July 30, 2009, 2:09 am

actually press the shift button the same time your press with your mouse the restore button on the summary tab of your ipod in the itunes window. then it’ll open a window and you search for the file you downloaded which might be desktop or documents most likely

  • Daruba July 13, 2008, 8:55 am

Although I was willing to pay for the upgrade, I simply could not buy it because Apple don’t let some countries buy stuff using iTunes (like Aruba). My U$D visa seems to be worth nothing @ Apple.

Thank you so much for making this available! It works just great, and it’s a beautiful upgrade overall.

  • peter July 13, 2008, 8:57 am

    ohk so i downloaded 7.7 itunes…but where do i click restore?…

    plz help.

    • RyanC February 4, 2009, 6:31 am

You have to connect your iPod Touch to your computer. A screen will then come up showing your iPod’s info. If it doesn’t, then look over on the right of the iTunes window, and under the devices section. There will be an option with your iPod’s name. Click it. A little of center will be the “restore” button in question.

  • Georgia July 14, 2008, 3:38 pm

Is there a way for this to work on Mac’s?
Or do you know where restore is on a mac?
By the way, where would you click on a PC for restore?

I dont have any problem syncronizing or downloading apps, after installing this firmware you can restore it to the real firmware version of apple without pay.

    enjoy for free πŸ˜‰

  • Daduy July 15, 2008, 10:27 pm

    thanks again!

  • ipod touch fan July 16, 2008, 2:14 am

Did anyone tried to jailbreak their ipod with ziphone with itunes 7.7? Did it work?

    • victor February 11, 2009, 10:44 am

      Hey it does work.

You just have to restore the iPod and then just open the Ziphone folder and for the iPod is the second choice and it did work fine.

  • LG July 16, 2008, 4:56 am

Thanks for the information, I greatly appreciate it!

For those of you having trouble, after you download the new iTunes and the ipsw file from one of the addresses given in the original post, plug in your iPod touch. When iTunes opens, the restore button is located on the main tab where you would sync the files from your library. You want to hold down the shift key when you click on the restore button and a window should open asking for the ipsw file. It’ll work and tell you that the iPod is being restored to its factory settings but then you’ll see all the new features afterwards on the iPod screen. The only bummer is that all your files have to be re-synced but that’s just a minor issue.

    • aimee July 8, 2009, 9:29 am

i downloaded it but when i press shift+restore the ipsw file doesnt appear in the window that opens!!!
      what should i do?????
( my ipod is first generation, 16G, firmware 1.1.5 )
      please help me!!

  • Mael July 16, 2008, 12:53 pm

Thank you so much. This really works. My daughter has one Ipod Touch and I upgraded hers for USD 10. Not willing to pay another USD 10 for my Touch that I took this suggestion. The total time is still faster even if you to have to do a re-sysnced.

  • dezzigner July 16, 2008, 4:25 pm

Cool, it’s work on my 16Gb ipod touch.
I have been tried to upgrade to 2.0 with many video guides from Youtube but they all craps!!
For Mac user you have to hold down the shift key when you click on the restore button.
Waiting for jailbreaking 2.0 and add installer.. πŸ™‚
    Thanks dude!!!

  • Anthony July 17, 2008, 1:06 am

    Thanks for that
It’s working well most the time, but my iPod randomly resets itself when i go to load an app. Do you know why?
By the way, I downloaded from RapidShare.

  • Fan July 17, 2008, 4:53 am

I’ve do it with Uploaded.to but when I click restore and click the firmware It says ”error 1403” what should I do?

    • Adrienne January 7, 2009, 10:23 am

Yeah, that happened to me too. I’ve tried it 3 times, and error 1403 keeps popping up, and I really don’t want to buy it from iTunes. Does anyone here have a solution?

  • Jake July 17, 2008, 5:42 am

    Help πŸ™

    • Hanz June 3, 2009, 5:02 pm

So, you have to delete it ALL? πŸ˜•

    • Alexjablonski April 22, 2011, 3:33 pm

to all those who ever have this problem, it might be that you need to plug the ipod usb into the back of your computer. If you have a knock-off ipod cable and the first solution still doesnt work, then you may want to get a real ipod cable and retry. it worked for me. This is if you have error (2003)

  • Josh Myers July 18, 2008, 3:28 am

I upgraded to the official Apple iPod Touch 2.0 software through iTunes and it worked fine for the first two days. After that I keep getting message saying that an “unknown error 0xE8000035 has occured”! I can’t use my iPod or sync. I’ve tried restoring and hard restarting. I’ve killed the battery twice and nothing works! HELP ME!

Please e-mail me at sizlopedia@myersjj.com with any answers you might have!

  • monster July 18, 2008, 5:30 am

  • Mafaz July 19, 2008, 10:02 pm

hey, for tose of you who have problems with iTunes, just go to iTunes and click on ‘Restore’, this will restore your iPod to factory settings, since you already have the 2.0 ver. iTunes will download it for free and you will have the actual (Official) update without having to pay anything

For the person who asked about Installer on 2.0 read this… http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

  • andreas July 21, 2008, 2:53 am

i cam get it work?? help me plzz..

  • cameron July 21, 2008, 5:29 am

Yo, dude! thnx man it works so fucking nicely, u da man!!

  • ddgv July 21, 2008, 9:12 am

well hi there… for the ppl asking if there was installer… well yes but there is pwnage involved first (look at the link above me…with the link to the dev team blog) BUT even if there is installer sadly there is NO apps ported to 2.0
this means that none of the apps found in installer and in cydia (alternative to installer) will be able to work in firmware 2.0 … so in bottom line jailbreaking 2.0 does nothing except get you ready for the future apps (hopefully)

  • Deevesh July 21, 2008, 4:52 pm

Wats the difference between Pwnage tool and download?

  • Ipodtouch fan July 21, 2008, 5:03 pm

  • James July 22, 2008, 1:28 am

I have newer version 1.1.5 and it won’t let me install the ipsw.
It won’t give me the option to select the ipsw file. Anyone has the same problem.

  • Tadjelynn July 22, 2008, 4:32 am

    16GB iPod Touch
    1.1.4 Jailbroken

Installed this update and it worked perfectly, though lost all jailbroken apps including Installer.app and Cydia. I am able to download apps using iTunes and put them on the iPod. I am not in a wifi area so I haven’t been able to test them, but it looks good so far.

I’m pretty annoyed that it costs another $10 after already paying $20 before, and it also costs for most of the apps. But I guess we get the security of knowing Apple has checked all of these apps and if anything were to happen because of them Apple would warranty the iPod.

Apple = Evil! But there is something attractive in evil.
Damn them for making us want them more! -_^

  • TY July 22, 2008, 5:16 am

i downloaded the file, but i too get the error 1403. What should i do?

  • Chevon July 27, 2008, 9:00 am

Extra mirrors if anyone needs max speed, I’ve uploaded the firmware to rapidshare. If you have dsl, you can just turn off, then turn on your modem after each part so you don’t have to wait. The links are below in 3 parts.

  • et2007c July 27, 2008, 1:58 pm

I had experience on two error code 1403 and 1602, error 1403 you need to re-download the another firmware again, error 1602 to uninstll and install iturn again. This update is work, thanks.

    • teaspoon February 24, 2009, 10:03 am

I had these two errors also, but thanks to Et2007c I was able to get past them and update successfully.

I had some long, tense moments when I thought I was stranded between versions, and I had to keep restarting the firmware download — took several tries and over 4 hours (*OMG* that “uploaded.to” mirror site is slow! Try searching for that restore file somewhere else, before using the ones linked on the page.)

But finally, after downloading the firmware twice, and reinstalling iTunes, I updated my iTouch from 1.1.4 to 2.0 — and then let iTunes update it to 2.2.1 — and the process went very smoothly.

After everything was working, I went ahead and did the jailbreak, which is fast and flawless. Now I have the best of both worlds!

For those who are using the rapidshare links in downloading the FW, if your system is Windows XP, use HJSplit ( http://www.freebytesoftware.com/download/hjsplit.zip ) to join the three splitted files…

  • kkfgeo August 24, 2008, 6:48 am

Thank you for posting this. It worked perfectly. I was really mad when I found out that I had to pay $ to upgrade the OS when I bought the iTouch NEW!!! It’s almost like buying a new car, and when you get home, you find out your car has a carburetor and I need to pay $ to upgrade to fuel injection. And the iTouch is not cheaper than the iPhone, and they get a free upgrade. Anyways, thank you very very much!

  • asapai August 25, 2008, 11:02 am

    worked great, thanks dude

  • Jais August 27, 2008, 12:03 am

  • Jisatsu August 27, 2008, 3:48 am

Hey for the people that was having the problem with the ipod it was saying cannot sync with numbers. all you have to do is download Itunes again, and it will accept it. I use Mac so i’m not sure for microsoft.

Also Check under your Music File, click on itunes and search for anything that looks different and delete it

  • Jisatsu August 27, 2008, 3:50 am

ooh i forgot to add to save you time and trouble before you do what he tells you hold down ctrl and click on your ipod and make a backup, takes 5 seconds.

  • help please? August 27, 2008, 7:23 pm

  • Scott Soo Chin August 28, 2008, 7:57 pm

I tried using this method several times following the instructions, downloading from the sources provided, holding Shift when clicking restore, selecting the firmware I downloaded. All seems to be fine up until an error message pops up. I think one that says “-5” something I can’t remember off hand.
This is the correct filename right?
If so can someone PLEASE help?

  • Scott Soo Chin August 28, 2008, 8:00 pm

I tried doing this by following the instructions:

    1. Download iTunes 7.7 from Here.
    did it
    2. Hold Shift and click Restore.
    did it
    3. Select iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw
    did it
    4. Enjoy!
    did not

    Can someone please help?

  • Jason August 30, 2008, 12:28 am

The update went fine. However, iTunes still says that there is a newer version available but no worries, I can now (legally) download the update via iTunes. For free.

    Thanks Saad
i have not yet updated the firmware on iPod but at least there is a ray of hope. and after reading the comments by all users, i am sure it will work with my ipod touch 8GB also.
the only thing that bug me is the merging of the files on windows XP. I found one comment for it in the same blog

Windows XP, use HJSplit ( http://www.freebytesoftware.com/download/hjsplit.zip ) to join the three splitted files…

  • Hany November 18, 2008, 11:52 pm

Hello…I am using iPod 16GB right now…after downloading this file I followed the steps mentioned above, on this site of yours but when I hold shift and press restore and then click the file, an error occurs and my iPod isn’t updated.

  • Ray November 23, 2008, 12:54 pm

Only can be updated by Mac? not through Windows?

  • john November 24, 2008, 6:36 pm

    Hey guys!

Somehow its not working on mine. when I do the whole Shift, Tab and restore thing and start updating, it only says that its preparing to restore and after like a minute theres an error and its not able to do so.

Can u tell me what I am wrong? thanks a lot!

  • Ezmyrelda November 25, 2008, 9:02 am

This for the person that purchased the upgrade. Once you purchase it you can put it on as many iPods as you want. The upgrade is attached to a user account NOT an iPod. BTW 2.2 is a great update as it fixes connection issues with WPA/2.

  • Jess November 30, 2008, 10:17 am

okay so i uploaded it on one of the links.
and its uploaded to my computer.

    now what do i do??

  • cole December 3, 2008, 6:30 am

Hey anyone i have a little issue. i cant connect to the internet. any ideas? the new software seem to be working just fine but it wnt connect to the internet source anymore. pelase help

    • Bugs December 15, 2008, 4:00 am

      Hi Cole,

May be a stupid point.. but have you reconfigured your wireless access? The upgrade for some, does erase all configurations and you have to do it again.

  • Bugs December 9, 2008, 3:14 am

Well wanted to thank you for uploading the FW. and thanks to all who have posted their comments. It did help me get thru from 1.1.5 to 2.2 (yes its 2.2 now). there was a scary moment where my iPod Touch just hung and refused to accept any of my commands. after a few nervous minutes it was back up and on to 2.0. I restarted and loaded up iTunes and opted for the upgrade to 2.2. iTunes quickly downloaded the package, but soon enough there was an error “13” saying it has failed updates. But once again I restarted connected to iTunes and there is was 2.2. I confirmed this on the iPod Touch too.. It says 2.2. its been working fine for the last hr or so. I was able to sync all my songs and pics.

Thanks once again guys. this works like a charm..

  • Jake December 12, 2008, 3:24 pm

Hey I am trying it and I cant figure out how to do it?

    • Bugs December 15, 2008, 4:04 am

      Hi Jake,

I’m quoting the steps mentioned by LG ( almost half a page above).

Follow this and you should be fine,

  • Alucard December 17, 2008, 6:36 am

If my iPod touch is Jailbroken would this work? Please need a answer for this question! Am so Puzzled!

    • Audge March 5, 2009, 6:42 am

Yes, if your iPod is jailbroken you can still upgrade it to 2.0 but when you restore it, it will no longer be jailbroken

  • Jack December 20, 2008, 7:03 am

    This works amazing. Thanks.

  • avi December 21, 2008, 6:59 pm

Just to let you know I successfully upgraded from 1.1.4 to 2.0 using the tutorial above.

I then connected to iTunes and upgraded to 2.2 with no problems. I now have the new apps and appstore is working fine. I chose not to jailbreak so can’t comment on that

    Thanks for everybody’s help

  • vivian December 25, 2008, 7:18 pm

I did everything right, but it keeps getting stuck at “Preparing iPod for software update”!

what should I do? is anyone experiencing the same problem?

  • Leigh January 2, 2009, 9:14 am

Does this work with iTunes 8.0?

  • Johnnie Rocket January 7, 2009, 10:15 am

Hey, this worked perfectly for me, I did exactly as the instructions above said, and it seems to have gone great. I even went on to update to version 2.2 and that went smoothly too. It automatically re-synched all the content I had put on the ipod, so I didn’t have to reload all my content, but I haven’t yet checked the WEP codes or other settings. Oh, and I cancelled the re-synch at the version 2.0 bootup, as it will be wiped out again immediately at the 2.2 update. No use in waiting that extra 30 minutes twice. It does take a pretty long time – I have about 8 gigs on my 16GB model and it took around 2 hours start to finish.

Thanks alot, not just for the cost savings, but for the spirit of helping others!

  • Ace January 10, 2009, 10:47 pm

Pardon me! but will it work with the latest itunes?

  • ACE January 11, 2009, 1:15 am

  • madi January 12, 2009, 4:41 am

  • Codin January 17, 2009, 9:38 am

  • kris January 22, 2009, 10:16 pm

Hey! every time I try to upgrade my ipod to 2.0 (hold shift and click restore, then select iPod Firmware file) it always says error 1403. I have installed RegCure and done the super long scan many times and fixed the errors but the Error 1403 still comes up!

    Please help me πŸ™

  • confused January 23, 2009, 8:20 pm

I hold shift and click on restore, I can’t find the file you told me about, I’ll be expecting an e-mail from you.

  • mrb91 January 25, 2009, 2:17 am

Worked perfectly. Thanks a lot for the link.

  • Farrin January 25, 2009, 8:44 pm

After I spent an hour downloading the file, I went into my itunes, held shift and clicked restore, found the file and clicked okay, it said an unknown error occurred.

    Now what? please help!

  • Stefan January 30, 2009, 4:12 am

    It worked! thanks πŸ˜€

  • Billy January 31, 2009, 3:08 pm

Worked like a dream on a Macbook running iTunes 8.0 and first generation 8gb touch… An hour to download from uploaded to then 20 minutes of installation of 2.0 and then iTunes asks if I want to update to 2.2.1 which it does without problems so another 20 minutes of download and the newest firmware is there. Cool

  • Gizelle February 5, 2009, 9:27 pm

To those who are getting the Error 1403, please make sure that you’re downloading the whole 222.6 MB file. Sometimes, due to unknown glitch, you tend to download only part of the file thus giving you this error when you restore. I know ’cause it happened to me.

It took me a couple of hours to download (about 2 or 3 hours, I think) but it was worth the wait as I’m able to upgrade my iPod’s software from version 1.1.4 to 2.0. Then I proceeded to upgrade again to version 2.2.1 and this time, iTunes didn’t harass me to pay $9.95 anymore.

You just need a lot of patience on this one but it works. And by the way, you can do this trick even on iTunes 8.0. πŸ™‚

  • nadeem February 8, 2009, 12:25 am

Can someone help me out? How long does the update process take? Its been saying “preparing iPod for restore” for the longest time now
should it take more then 5 mins?

  • David February 8, 2009, 10:16 pm

When I try to install this, I get Error 1604. I tried all the methods of solving it such as delete update.dll, re-install iTunes, and putting the touch into restore/recovery mode but nothing works.

I also tried using a different account and finally a different computer but I still get the same error.

    Any ideas?

  • Chris February 18, 2009, 12:38 am

You can also get this file on torrent sites like the Pirate Bay. For example: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4287908/iPod1_1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

    Downloads a lot faster ..

  • Roman February 20, 2009, 6:56 am

Just to clear this out for everybody, It works on iTunes 8. Use HjSplit to join the parts if you downloaded them off Rapidshare.

And yes it works on Windows too.

Its okay for it to say processing… just wait after about 10-20 mins, it will say that it has been restored.

  • jenny February 21, 2009, 7:05 pm

The link below is where I downloaded the FULL firmware instead of the 3 files from rapidshare.

Simply make sure you choose the correct one. (1G, 2G) if you don’t you will get a firmware error

For those of you that dont know if you have 1G or 2G, the 2G has buttons on the side (volume) whereas the 1G doesn’t πŸ™‚

i'm not able to upgrade for free my ipod with iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

when i click to restore it search to ipod upgrade e does not offer me the choice to choose the upgrade but only the option to restore my 1.1 original settings.
    do i do something wrong?
    thank you for your time

Hey. Im thinking about doing this because I REALLY want to put some apps into my ipod. But, can someone tell me if this will mess up my Ipod touch in any way? Cause if there's even a 5% chance it might, I am not willing to take the risk.

i downloaded teh itunes, but i dont know hopw and when to hold shift and click restore?? can anyone help me

    • greenfire63 October 31, 2009, 2:53 am

Connect your ipod to itunes, click on the ipod in the left hand toolbar in itunes, go to summary. On the bottom, you should see a breakdown of your ipod's free space. Look up, and you will see 2 buttons. Update, and restore. Hold shift and click restore, then find the downloaded file and select it.

Β This is frustrating! Doing this, your telling me to select
“iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw” where is itΒ  in my documents, like what do you mean. Mind elaborating you explanation.
