Both are highly dangerous to the stability of your system. Most of what it does can be done by going to Applications -> Add/Remove and searching for "restricted" in the box at the top. Hit the checkbox for Ubuntu Restricted Extras. Apply. Wait a bit while it all downloads and installs. The difference is that this way it'll be done *properly*. I used Automatix once, and later tried to upgrade Ubuntu and everything broke quite spectacularly(Automatix had messed up all the dependencies). I know now better than to trust a third party script with so much. This little program could mess up your Ubuntu setup just as well as its predeccesor automatix.

All your media codecs etc. can be found in the medibuntu package.
