Samsung Pixon Goes Official and Features 8MP Camera

The 8 Mega Pixel handsets seem to be the next milestone for most cell phone makers. Last week it was LG, who officially announced its successor to Viewty, the KC-910. It featured an 8 MP camera with some advanced photographic capabilities, including manual focus, and 120 fps video recording.

Today Samsung also officially announced their device. The Samsung Pixon also features an 8 mega pixel camera, along with a lot of similarities with the LG handset. This includes a large touchscreen, advanced image filters, assisted GPS with GEO tagging, 120 fps video capture for slow motion effects, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, and many more.

Samsung setup a teaser site to go with the announcement which also promises more information to be available on October 2. From the currently revealed specs, the Samsung device is slightly thinner (13.8 mm) and has a larger display of 3.2" with a 5.1 virtual surround capture support but has LED flash (compared to Xenon flash in KC910) and apparently no WiFi support is announced yet.

After a season of the Open Source mobile operating systems, the race now seems to be on getting HD into these devices. Divx has already been stated working on chips for this purpose and expects to market them next year. The shift of momentum from digital cams and camcorders to cell phone is significant enough to say that we may be walking around with a handset capable of taking 10 MP photos and capturing videos at 1080i by 2010.

As for now, both the companies are set to release their products this October. We will feature a head to head comparison as both devices become available. Till then share your thoughts if these new devices could be potential iPhone killers, or pose a threat to the upcoming Google HTC G1?
