The long-in-alpha version of one of the lightest Linux distribution ever, called WattOS, made its Beta debut a couple of days ago.
For those not keeping a tab on this project, WattOS is a recreation of the Ubuntu Linux platform in a lightweight fashion that runs quickly with low system requirements. It has got a fairly good development roadmap as compared to other Linux distros and we can guarantee it isn't dying anytime soon.
We reviewed WattOS Alpha back in July this year and it seemed to be a quite feature-enrich and promising operating system just like Ubuntu.
This distro manly focuses on low-power machines and comes in three different flavors for the desktop.
- wattOS - The core desktop system using a fully featured Gnome desktop.
- mWattOS - Milliwatt a smaller desktop system using XFCE as the core interface. (known as mWOS).
- µWattOS - Microwatt an even smaller desktop utilizing a minimal desktop GUI or command line. Ideal for appliances, small systems, kiosks, or old computers.
If you love Ubuntu, you will definitely love WattOS too. To kill time till the release of Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex, I suggest you give WattOS (beta) a try and let us know your thoughts.
