How to Preview Desktop in Windows 7

windows7-desktopAs I keep discovering the new Microsoft OS i.e. Windows 7, I find some of its feature really interesting and useful.

One such feature is the Desktop Preview which allows users to temporarily minimize open windows by hovering the mouse on the far-end of the taskbar. This allows them to take a sneak-preview of the desktop without forcefully minimizing all open windows.

The reason I find this feature helpful is because at times you need to quickly view your desktop (e.g. to check for a file that you have recently downloaded etc) and this feature allows you to do so without minimizing all open windows.

windows7-desktop-2Some users might find this feature annoying as most old-school users would still prefer to fully switch to Desktop instead of just taking a preview. For them, there is even an option to disable the 'Desktop Preview' feature.

Just right click on the far-end of the taskbar in Windows 7 and uncheck 'Preview Desktop' which should be checked by default.

I hope you enjoy the Windows 7 experience. Please share your thoughts about Windows 7 beta in the comments.

I guess it’s like ctrl+alt+d in ubuntu, which minimizes/unminimizes all of your windows.

this works with [windows] + d, too
but its a nice function. i like all the “hover functions” of windows 7. it makes working with it much more convenient.

It is also has a shortcut, WinKey + Spacebar. The feature would be far more useful if I could interact with the desktop whilst pressing that key combination. e.g. to open a file that know is on the desktop.
