A while ago Twitter had to cut back on mobile integration for some countries which was indeed a big turndown for some of the big Twitterholics like me. Posting to Twitter via mobile using GPRS/EDGE is still in no way as easy and as affordable as using SMS for the same purpose.
Good news for Twitter users in Pakistan is that now you will be able to post to Twitter via SMS on your mobile which means you no longer require a GPRS/EDGE enabled handset or a data plan and what brings more joy to this offer is that it is free and you only get charged by your local carrier for a SMS per tweet.
This new service is brought to you by the Twitter Pakistan Project initiative launched by iSMS which provides an online SMS inbox service for mobile users in Pakistan.
So here is how to get started.
- Make a comment on this post telling us why you love Twitter and we will mail you an invite to use iSMS as it is in private beta.
- Once you register using the invite code, login and navigate to iSMS settings.
- Enter your phone number (e.g. 03335408221), name and make sure the Receive SMS box is checked and then click Update.
- Now in the Twitter Integration tab, enter your credentials and click Update.
- You will now receive an SMS from a number having your phone activation code. Use it to authenticate your account and save the number as a contact with the name 'iSMS' on your phone.
And thats it!
Now whenever you want to post to Twitter, Make an SMS and simply write 'tweet<space><tweet content>' and send it to the iSMS contact number that you saved earlier. Look for an example below.
tweet Tweeting in Pakistan is going to be so much affordable and fun from now on
Make sure to test it out and let us know if you run into any problems. We will try to help you out along with the iSMS team.
For those in Pakistan still wondering what Twitter is? In short, it is a way to update your status and let others know what you might be doing on a particular instant. Its a fun and addictive new way of staying connected with your friends wherever you go. So go ahead and give it a try and I am sure you will love it.
A big thanks to Yaser for tipping us on this.
