Use HJSplit (for PC) and Split&Concact (for Mac) to join the parts into one file. Once you download the firmware locally on your PC or Mac, follow the steps above to update iPod Touch to Firmware 3.0.

you can try redsn0w 0.7 but not gauranteed to work 100%. i faced tonnes of error for 3.0 and am considering going back to 2.2.1 till they come out with something really able to fully jailbreak os 3.0

Thank you so much! i just installed it on my 2nd gen iPod Touch. The only thing that was a little complicated and hard to figure out was how to use the HJsplit program but i found out that you have to add the extenstion .001 to the first one and then .002 to the second one and so on.

You can jailbreak the 3.0 now. I strongly suggest going on youtube and finding Tysiphone help because he knows what he is talking about and he can help you with any format and any device apple related. Totally great. Check his recent videos because he just came out with the Redsnow jailbreak a couple days ago.

Hi, when u hold the Shift button (PC) or the Option button (Mac) and click the restore button a menu bumps up where u can choose the location of the update files. Works perfectly for me. =)

You're supposed to download from all 3 links into a folder (if you don't have Rapidshare, you'll have to wait 15 min. btwn downloading). You then extract just one of them to the same folder and it will use all 3 file for extraction. Open iTunes and hold Shift while clicking Resore and then click the file that has been extracted. Simple computer skills…..thanks a lot to Saad Hamid for the post.

When u download and extract out of the zip go on Itunes and just Do Step 3
and go to where u extracted the Firmwire, double click it and BAM its in progress…

Ok, when you use RESTORE press ctrl and then press the button RESTORE, in this point, iTune will open a browsing window, use it to reach the place where you left the update file, select it and bingo! enjoy!

First of all Thanks. Second the files are .rar which is Winrar not HJSplit. HJSplit is like .001. That is why you're having problems with joining them. Because you are using the wrong software and someone should edit that post to change HJSplit to Winrar Thought I should point that out.

if you want to jailbreak your ipod touch 2G, look for the software that is named quickfreedom. it works. i hacked mine and so far, no crash whatsoever.

I’ve downloaded all the .rar files from rapid share and split and concat

I tried to “join them into one file” but there is no option for that on S&C. If I click concat it only lets me choose one. If I try to drag them to the dock to the S&C Application it only lets me split. Then they end up chopped into smaller files. If I click concat (separately)they are still 3 files. SOmetimes S&C eats up the .rar one.

I have downloaded the free .ipsw iPod Touch 2G update firmware 3.0 file from the site – http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/

The file downloaded successfully…

Then I connected my iPod Touch 2G to my Mac using USB. Then I went to the main screen of iPod Touch. There, as I was told ,I clicked the ‘update’ button holding the option + control key. A box opened which showed all files on my Mac. I browsed through the files and selected the .ipsw iPod Touch firmware 3.0 update file. The file was selected and the iPod started to update.
BUT after a while an unknown error (14) occurred , which said that the iPod could not be restored.

Can any1 tell me about error (14) and why is it caused

Downloaded it fine, but I can’t shift-restore my G1 iPod Touch without bricking it. I always get the infamous error 604 line. Tried everything:
1. shift+restoring from fw 2.2.1
2. reinstalling iTunes
3. downloading fw 3.0 from different sites
4. logging into windows using different account
5. deleting all files on my computer that has to do with iTunes (clean uninstall)
and still doesn’t work. Please help. I have my suspicion with the iTunes 8.2 I installed. It’s for the Vista 64 but I installed on my XP x64. It runs quiet normally but I think that that is the reason why I can’t update to OS 3.0. Can anyone help please? Thanks!

Thank you!! I've got a 1st generation Touch and wasnt gonna pay £6 for an update that hardly changes much for my ipod.

Just make sure the 3.0 firmware you've downloaded and re-joined finishes with .ipsw and it should work perferctly for you too.

The only restore I can find is if I right click on the device name and select “Restore from Backup…” and then it brings up a menu that I can only select my ipod name and it says this will not restore ipod firmware.
So where is the restore button that lets me pick the new firmware?

hey Jed, had the same problem searching for it but i found it.

after connected you itouch to your computer and opening itunes, click on your itouch icon, then when a screen that says “would you like to buy the 3.0 firmware for $9.99″, just press “no thanks” or “remind me later”. Then click it should automatically go on the “summary” tab. Shaded in a gray should be the VERSION box, and under the “Update” button, you'll find the “Restore” button.

Hope that helps, all the other people above never bothered answering this simple question. Haha

I think you're referring to the iPod capacity 8Gb. You can see if you have 1G or 2G in Settings->General->About.

If you're tired of waiting for Rapidshare I also suggest going to SoftPedia, that's where I downloaded mine and you don't have to use HJSplit for it.

This is one of the best and free way to update ur itouch for free.. Thanks alot to the uploader.. Worked flawlessly for me and it definitely saved me from spending my money.. Pros are it is quite fast (approx. 45 mins including resyncing), free, simple to use, does not require much computer skills.. The con is, you have to resync your whole library n apps although that is just a minor issue cuz everything is in itunes. This is the best there is out there and hope you guys dont have any problems.. I didnt have any problems ! i rate this 5 stas ! Go on, try it out guys.. You know you want it ! =)

its so easy , just download all the aprts and see which is compaiable with your system and then shift and restore it bit make sure all your media is gonna lost, back up it in your i tuners first then when you download all the parts extract in winzip or winrar and make it a single file and then start the above process

When I downloaded the 2g files, they were downloaded as rar. files, and the HJ split can't detect them. What to do?

unpack the rar files, put them in a folder, any one will do as long as they're together. rename the extensions, in order of the parts, .001, .002, and .003, then using the join function, select the 001 file, and Hj will do the rest. I just did mine and it worked perfectly, thank you very much (note: I did buy the upgrade from apple, but their downloading was atrocious, couldn't get it even though I paid for it, so this was a great alternative. thanks again.)

Nobody on this blog can explain cleary what to do really, it's bad!

So, after download of three part I tried to mixt them with HJsplit …this program did't find my three part….they was in on file but when I use HJsplit to search and mixt them they was not there.

So with this defeat I tried to extract saparely the 3 files and the second did't work because three fucking errors

So if you have any solution tks to response.
Or suggest me another blog who explain how to have this firmware

On Step 3, If you press shift while clicking “update” instead of “restore”, you will update the the firmware AND keep all your apps, movies, videos, music on your iPod Touch.

Worked like a charm. Used the 'Update + Shift' option and updated to 3.0 software. After reboot, itunes prompted and loaded the 3.1.2 update immediately. No $$$$ BS apple charges.

did everything correctly and it extracts software, and is verifying the restore with itunes. Then I get this message:

The iPod “iPod touch” could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build.

Don't know where to go from here, have a 2g itouch, no jailbreak, running osx 10.6 and itunes 8.2.1. Updating to itunes 9 now, hopefully that may work. If not, anyone got any ideas? Could it be I downloaded 3.1.1 firmware instead of 3.0 which needs to be done first? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

i upgraded my 2.2.1 2nd generation ipod to 3.0 then upgraded it to 3.1.2 firmware..downloaded apps but they are not working?? did i miss a step in downloading? please help…when i click them they pop up and go away immediatly

for the people having trouble just make a new folder on your desktop download everything into that, then extract one file (i did par one and i got the whole .ipsw) i didnt even need the HJsplit thingy after it extracts just restore it and your done! =) hope this helped

Ugh! After I downloaded the software and followed the directions, an error popped up saying “The iPod could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible.” I noticed a lot of other people are having the same problem. Someone please help!!!!!

OK! If you are using mac, download all three files, and download an application called RAR Expander. It's a very easy app to use and interface. Keep all 3 files in one folder, and using RAR Expander, open the first of the three files. RAR Expander will automagically uncompress AND put all the files together! Go to iTunes, plug in iPod, Hold OPTION and click UPDATE. This will open a window that allows you to choose the update file! Browse to the uncompressed, combined apple update file, open it, and let iTunes do it's magic. Fully tested and worked on iPod Touch 2G. If you have any questions, your an idiot and should just download the update.

GAH! I downloaded all 3 files, axtracted into one, and when I go to extract another, it says 'do yuo want to overwrite this file?'. I click rename, and take off the .ipsw extension and put .001 / .002 / .003 for each. Is that right? After that I used the HJSplit to join them together (because they wouldnt show up as .ipsw files). And also when I plug my iPod into iTunes it asks me if I want to update to version 3.1.2. WTF?? Im not exactly sure what update version my iPod is but its a 1st gen. Im downloading it now, but it didnt ask me to pay for anything. Does that mean I dont have to pay for? And should I just use this and not try and get this bullshiet 3.0 to work? Help would be MUCH appreciated.

new version of firmware 3.0 for iPod touch 2G, is free. Just connect your ipod to computer and go to apple store from iTunes. It's free!!

To clear things up for people;
1. Download all three files under your generation to a folder.
2. (for windows) download WinRar.
3. Right click the first file, and press extract. (there will be a plain folder)
4. Now plug in your ipod, and open itunes.
5. click your device.
6. For me, I shift+clicked UPDATE.
7. click the folder you saved ALL the files in.
8. The folder you extracted will pop up.
9. Open that folder, and there will be ONE file.
10. That file will run the update.

I don't think you need to download ALL the files, but I chose to. To speed the process up, you might want to try this process, only downloading the first one.

OH, and before you try the update, on itunes, press File>transfer purchases from “device name here”, to back everything up.
