How to Update iPod Touch to Firmware 3.0 for Free?

Download the latest iTunes from here.
Connect your iPod Touch 1G or 2G to PC/Mac with iTunes.
Click on Restore while holding Shift (for PC) and Option (for Mac).
Browse to the Firmware 3.0 for your device and select it.

Sit back and enjoy while iTunes does the rest! There you go, did it without even paying a penny!

Use HJSplit (for PC) and Split&Concact (for Mac) to join the parts into one file. Once you download the firmware locally on your PC or Mac, follow the steps above to update iPod Touch to Firmware 3.0.

The steps are VERY unclear.

Main Question: How will iTunes detect where I have those files I d/l from RapidShare? It all seems fishy.

You're supposed to download from all 3 links into a folder (if you don't have Rapidshare, you'll have to wait 15 min. btwn downloading). You then extract just one of them to the same folder and it will use all 3 file for extraction. Open iTunes and hold Shift while clicking Resore and then click the file that has been extracted. Simple computer skills.....thanks a lot to Saad Hamid for the post.

i did all the steps. i got all the files into one file. its an .ispw file.
and i go to shift restore. select the file and it says "the ipod cannot be restored because the firmwire file is not compatible"
its really frustrating, can someone tell me what to do please..

well it didnt work for me it said it wasnt compatible. i downloaded bot te one for the 1G and the 2G and neither workd for me and i have already deleted the one for the 1G

put all the downloaded files in folder and extract one of the file using winrar. then you will find one new sofware update file.then go to itunes press restore while holding shift and select the extracted file.

Thank you!! I've got a 1st generation Touch and wasnt gonna pay £6 for an update that hardly changes much for my ipod.

Just make sure the 3.0 firmware you've downloaded and re-joined finishes with .ipsw and it should work perferctly for you too.

you guys do things way to complicated. when you download it, just choose save as and save as an ipsw file... way easier, no joining. THAT is simple computor skills.

The only restore I can find is if I right click on the device name and select "Restore from Backup..." and then it brings up a menu that I can only select my ipod name and it says this will not restore ipod firmware.
So where is the restore button that lets me pick the new firmware?

@ Jed, had the same problem searching for it but i found it.

After connecting your iTouch to your computer and opening itunes, click on your iTouch icon, then when a screen that says "would you like to purchase the 3.0 firmware for $9.99", just press "no thanks" or "remind me later". Then it should automatically go on the "summary" tab. Shaded in a gray should be the VERSION box, and under the "Update" button, you'll find the "Restore" button.

Hope that helps, all the other people above never bothered answering this simple question. Haha

I think you're referring to the iPod capacity 8Gb. You can see if you have 1G or 2G in Settings->General->About.

If you're tired of waiting for Rapidshare I also suggest going to SoftPedia, that's where I downloaded mine and you don't have to use HJSplit for it.

hi i have done evertything apart from join the files together. i am doing the 3.0 update, when i try and join the 3 files using HJsplit when i press start it says ' invalid floating operatin' somene help pleae !!!!

if u want to know how to jail brake it just look at youtube it helped me with my 2nd gen its realy easy steps even a 10 yr old can do it just follo the steps and vwalla ur jailbroken hapy free stuff!

This is one of the best and free way to update ur itouch for free.. Thanks alot to the uploader.. Worked flawlessly for me and it definitely saved me from spending my money.. Pros are it is quite fast (approx. 45 mins including resyncing), free, simple to use, does not require much computer skills.. The con is, you have to resync your whole library n apps although that is just a minor issue cuz everything is in itunes. This is the best there is out there and hope you guys dont have any problems.. I didnt have any problems ! i rate this 5 stas ! Go on, try it out guys.. You know you want it ! =)

its so easy , just download all the aprts and see which is compaiable with your system and then shift and restore it bit make sure all your media is gonna lost, back up it in your i tuners first then when you download all the parts extract in winzip or winrar and make it a single file and then start the above process

When I downloaded the 2g files, they were downloaded as rar. files, and the HJ split can't detect them. What to do?

unpack the rar files, put them in a folder, any one will do as long as they're together. rename the extensions, in order of the parts, .001, .002, and .003, then using the join function, select the 001 file, and Hj will do the rest. I just did mine and it worked perfectly, thank you very much (note: I did buy the upgrade from apple, but their downloading was atrocious, couldn't get it even though I paid for it, so this was a great alternative. thanks again.)

Fuck men! I don't know if I made anything incorrect, but for me, the part 2 is not correct...I have 3 errors in this files so...I'm don't able to extract this part.:(

It's really frustrating with the time I spend on this!!!

I downloaded the 3 files.
I downloaded winrar
I downloaded HJsplit

Nobody on this blog can explain cleary what to do really, it's bad!

So, after download of three part I tried to mixt them with HJsplit ...this program did't find my three part....they was in on file but when I use HJsplit to search and mixt them they was not there.

So with this defeat I tried to extract saparely the 3 files and the second did't work because three fucking errors

So if you have any solution tks to response.
Or suggest me another blog who explain how to have this firmware
I searched since long time and I never find
So complicated or expired!!!

On Step 3, If you press shift while clicking "update" instead of "restore", you will update the the firmware AND keep all your apps, movies, videos, music on your iPod Touch.
