A lot of Windows enthusiasts are looking forward to the Mobile World Congress (MWC) that is to be held from February 15 to 18 in Barcelona in a hope to see Microsoft reveal details about the next most-awaited mobile OS of the Windows Phones family.

But a report by DigiTimes claims that Windows Mobile 7 won't be making an appearance any soon, at least not till the end of 2010, or even as late as in 2011.

On the other hand the industry sources, cited by DigiTimes, claim that Microsoft will be pushing forward Windows Mobile 6.6 (codenamed 'Maldives') as a supplement to the current release for better performance, features and stability.

The new Windows Mobile 6.6 will provide native capacitive touch support which will later on serve as the core of the Windows Mobile 7 OS. An interesting fact remains that the HTC HD2 is the only Windows-mobile based phone available in the market that offers a capacitive touchscreen.

Only time will tell how Microsoft plans to go neck-to-neck with it's mobile OS rivals in the future, namely Android, iPhone OS and Palm's WebOS.
