Multitasking + New features in iPhone OS 4.0

A couple of minutes ago, Apple announced and previewed the iPhone OS 4.0 during a live-event at it's campus in Cupertino. As we see it, the new OS for the iPhone platform is no less than magical.

Although over a 100+ new features have been announced for the iPhone OS 4.0, but only 7 of the main features were previewed during the Apple which they call as they 'Tenpole" features. Here is a description of all such features:

Multitasking: Finally as we reported earlier, the new iPhone OS 4.0 will give the user the option to run app services in the background such as audio, voIP and location.
Folders: The users will now be able to organize their apps into intelligent folders which raises the app-limitation bar from 180 to 2160 on the iPhone.
Unified Inbox: All email inboxes are now unified into one vertical grid.
iBooks: The app will now be available to users on the iPhone.
Enterprise: Great new features for Enterprise users.
Game Center: This will be a social gaming network much like Xbox Live from Microsoft which will allow users to find players using the in-built Matchmaker.
iAd: The last, but not the least, is the Apple's in-phone advertising platform that delivers rich-content ads from right within an app on the iPhone.

That's all. Those were some of the most unique features of the iPhone OS 4.0 platform. Unfortunately! as Apple announced the new OS will only be available to users of iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G as all previous models of the devices do not have the hardware guts to support the OS.

I love the folders. I jailbreaked my phone and downloaded a similar app to that of the folders but it wasnt that good. I hope this is better and also it will be like a kindle or ebook reader with the ebooks.

I'd have to say I do like the multitasking tentpole the best. Not really because of multitasking in general either. Firstly I get annoyed with the Android users who say “oh yeah well we have multitasking” well not anymore. I am extremely excited to see how well it operates on the Iphone because of how they've incorporated it. What I mean by that is how they have written the actually multitasking codes for the apps right into the OS. That seems to be a brilliant idea. Now the apps can obviously run a lot lighter because of the coding already being run in the OS. To me that makes the multitasking tentpole a sure winner. If all works out well I can now respond to Android users with “well not only do we have multitasking, we don't have to be plugged into a charger to use it ”

i cant wait for multitasking. i know its not true multitasking, but after thinking about it, i like this better. because of fast app switching, it give the appearance of always being open, without taking up any processor or battery. in that sense, i can have every single app on my phone always open and never suffering from performance

Definitely the Game Center… Always been waiting for an Xbox LIVE-esque service for gaming on the iPhone. Apple has left us in the dark about what exactly is available in the Game Center however, so I can't really say much other than the fact that I am excited.

My favourite feature is -like many- the multitasking feature.
This will totaly change the way I use my iPhone, ofcourse if it turns out as good as Steve presented it.

The other new features are ofcourse also very nice, but as Steve said, the multitasking is the big one.
But I was hoping to see som other features as well.
For example, the settings app, well its still a app.
I was hoping we were going to get a toggle in the status bar to quickly switch on and off for example wifi or bluetooth.
Also a page system in the dock would have been very nice.
Conclusion: A nice update, but I do hope that the promise that the battery life and performance of the iPhone will stay the same even with multitasking, is true.

I'm looking forward to the Enterprise enhancements promised. I haven't seen it mentioned by it sure would be nice to sync my Tasks natively OTA instead of with 3rd party apps. My 3G won't Multitask with OS 4 but we've had multitasking with our JB'ed devices. And I already use Categories so's Folders don't excite me.

Out of all the features, I would say that I can't decide between the multitasking and the folders. Both are wonderful features and being organized is something that I'm trying to get better at! But all of them are still pretty fascinating regardless.

in the past years its pretty cool how so much technology had came out. before 1995 not much happened. but now look at this world, there are computers everywhere and some little kid has some sick iphone. then the other people come around to jailbreak and get cool stuff then release it to public. thats awesome. the new 4.0 multitask and the new features look fantastic. the game achievements and live score board thing looks cool too!

I like the feature of multitasking. Although the jailbreak solution with backgrounder worked, i think its great that apple is finnaly doing it and giving us the feature that we have all been looking for since the iphone came out. The backgrounder/proswitcher was elegant and worked, but anything from apple is always better than the homebrew solution

Multitasking will be great; it was interesting how Jobs mentioned that having a task manager is a bad idea yet their multitasking design is a task manager and if you hold press on the app it will come up with a minus symbol to kill it. So, Apple did create a task manager and a way to kill apps.

And the absolutely best thing with iPhone OS 4.0 is the possibility to set a wallpaper in the menu.
Finally no longer a black wallpaper there.
And the new dock is great. Looks much better than the grey one.

i definitely prefer the folder option. i have both multi-tasking and folders on my current phone and the one that i'd like apple to replace is my folder ability. the reason is, is because it is the most difficult thing to set up in the event of a crash. i would like it protected by apple's backup capabilities. and, devs will be able to spawn new concepts from it release which should expand that part of the os quite well.

The top four are all features I'm looking forward too… multitasking so I don't have to keep interrupting my workflow, folders so I can better organise stuff and see when one or two apps in a category have updates, unified email so I don't have to keep going back and forth between email accounts and iBooks… well, for the convenience of electronic books!

If I had to pick just one, it would be multitasking… all the others you can find apps for or can manage without… but multi-tasking is the most useful feature of the lot. Looking forward to the official release of iPhone 4.0 when it comes out later this yet!

I love the folders. I jailbreaked my phone and downloaded a similar app to that of the folders but it wasnt that good. I hope this is better and also it will be like a kindle or ebook reader with the ebooks.

Multitasking is ofocourse a great option added to iPhone.. But I have loved the idea of iAd far more.. Apple is a pioneer is developing an idea of advertising to people who have moved away from newspapers, TV, and have also stopped advertising on their web browsers.. This interactive medium will generate huge amounts of revenue for the media industry and I can see the competition growing in the near future.. It will bring forward a huge number of companies into advertising as Googe Adwords has done in the recent past. I now sit and wonder what new is coming in the span of another 2 years…

Well two of the tenpole features definately stand out for me, one of them being the ibooks which is great for me since i always read on the go and would love to make use of this app, and secondly the folders would be a great way to organize the hundreds of apps i usually have to flip through and waste time

Just want to find out what I am doing wrong. Seems I am the only one that had a comeback request? Did all of you guys in this post activated your OS4? I keep getting error in iTunes saying something like My device is not registered as part of the iPhone Developer Program and can not be activated. Now I have the OS4 Beta2 on my device but I am unable to use it. The instructions said to complete the form then post on this forum and in a view hours the device would be registered. Well it has been 21 Hours and still no luck. DID I DO SOMETHING WRONG???????

With all the new features I feel that the “folders” option is best improvement. Since I have so many apps for school and tons of games too, I think it would be really handing to use this new feature. I would have to say the folders. Looking for a particular app is akin to hunting for an endangered species in a rainforest on my iPhone (I have way too many apps). Organizing by page is tiring because you have to keep swiping across pages upon pages.
