Android beats Windows Mobile in Global Market

According to the first quarter data for mobile phone market share released by Gartner, Android has emerged victorious over Windows Mobile. Bear in mind the fact that we are talking about the market share at the global level, so this is a worthy achievement for Google.

While Android has beaten Microsoft's mobile OS in the market share race it still stands behind iPhone. iPhone has grabbed the third spot with the first spot going to Symbian and the second spot going to RIM. Android is sitting pretty at the fourth spot. But don't be surprise if you find it outperforming major mobile platforms by the 1Q of 2011.

Interestingly, Android and iPhone are the only mobile platform who have built on their first quarter showing for the year 2009, with each increasing their respective market share at an impressive rate.

These stats confirm what was expected previously, Windows Mobile is dying until and unless Windows Phone 7 can do something about it. It is safe to say that Microsoft will continue the downslide journey atleast for this year. Let us see if Microsoft can manage to come out of this hole as winners.

It was expected due to aggressive approach by Android, it also seem that one day Android will be able to challenge the mighty iPhone too.

Not exactly, the exponential growth of Android is because, Android is Open Source. Any mobile phone manufacturer or as a matter of fact, any person can modify and build there own version of Android OS and that is the driving force behind Android's ever increasing growth trajectory. With more open source OS like MeeGo also in the anvil, the closed source versions such as Apple and Windows mobile is going to have a really tough time ahead..
