On its 2nd anniversary, Google has released the 6th iteration of its widely-popular web browser Chrome. It is now available across Windows, Mac and Linux.

Here’s the official statement from Google:

Today, we’re releasing a new stable version of Chrome that is even faster and more streamlined. Chrome is now three times faster than it was two years ago on JavaScript performance. We’ve also been working on simplifying the “chrome” of Chrome. As you can see, we took the already minimalist user interface and stripped it down a bit more to make it easier to use. We combined Chrome’s two menus into one, revisited the location of the buttons, cleaned up the treatment of the URL and the Omnibox, and adjusted the color scheme of the browser to be easier on the eyes.

Generally speaking, Google makes little incremental updates to Chrome with each new stable release. While Firefox has achieved only version 3.5 in six years, Chrome has managed to reach version 6 in a mere two years.

Included in the latest release are:

  • Extension Synchronization: Sync your extensions/plug-ins across multiple computers with one Google Account
  • Support for V8/WebM videos
  • Built-in PDF support
  • UI changes (merged menu buttons) and a slightly more polished UI for Macs

How-to: Update

To update Google Chrome, follow these steps:

If Chrome is already installed

  • Open Google Chrome.
  • Click on the screw-driver options button on the top right corner. Now go to ‘About Google Chrome’ and click on “Check for updates”.
  • Be patient. Chrome will now download and install the update by itself.

If Chrome isn’t already installed

  • Download and install Google Chrome from official website.
