IBM folks surely know how to make a lasting impression on the increasingly competitive processor market. The high profile chipset maker has announced z196 - a 5.2 Ghz processor which according to IBM is the world's fastest microprocessor chip.

z196 is based on a four core architecture, has 1.4 billion transistors inside and has the mind blowing capability to handle more than 50 billion instructions per second.

Here is why this amazingly speedy processor will come in handy:

This world record-breaking speed is necessary for businesses managing huge workloads, such as banks and retailers, especially as the world becomes increasingly more inter-connected, data has grown beyond the world's storage capacity, and business transactions continue to skyrocket.

For example, according to a study by Berg Insight, the number of active users of mobile banking and related financial services worldwide is forecasted to increase from 55 million in 2009 to 894 million in 2015.

IBM will start shipping the world's fastest computer chip to its customers from 10th of September. No word on the pricing yet but expect it to fall in the highly priced zone.
