Rumors regarding Yahoo’s alleged layoffs have been circulating the web since the past couple of days, however now there is rather significant news at hand, something which cannot be waived off as a mere speculation. Yahoo is shutting down some of its services, the company has revealed in a round of layoffs yesterday.

A total of eight products will be shut down, which are MyBlogLog, Yahoo! Picks, AltaVista, Yahoo! Bookmarks, Yahoo! Buzz and even Delicious. Not all of these properties of Yahoo were internally generated as some had come from acquisitions as well, however regardless of that, all of them are being given the boot.

Yahoo has released a statement which says:

Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in underperforming or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond. We continuously evaluate and prioritize our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months such as Yahoo! Buzz, our Traffic APIs, and others. We will communicate specific plans when appropriate.

As discreetly as it could have been done, Yahoo has indeed confirmed that it is going to shut down these services. This news first broke out via a screenshot that was posted on Twitter which showed a leaked slide, however looking at this statement, it can be safely said that this move by the company is true.

Users would definitely miss Delicious, Yahoo’s bookmarking service which had gained quite some popularity on the internet and its about time that an alternative to Delicious showed up, and guessing from the fact that how rapidly things change on the internet, a new service just might be unveiling soon.
