Tutorial for Removing Apps and Creating Blank Spaces On 6th Gen iPod Nano Via Simple Springboard Hack

Yesterday, we told you about developer/hacker James Whelton who had performed a simple 6th Gen iPod nano hack by bypassing the device’s cache comparison and installing a simple Springboard hack through which blank spaces can be created. James Whelton has now posted a complete guide using which apps can be removed and then blank spaces can be created using the Springboard hack.

James Whelton Says:

This tutorial enables you to remove apps from the 6G iPod Nano Springboard and insert blank spaces into the springboard. The iPod Nano in this running the current 1.0 firmware and is Windows formated, have not yet tested this with a Mac formated one. Its fairly basic and simple, but shows that booting with a user modded file is possible and is a nice proof of concept and is the first small ‘hack’ as such for the new iPod Nano.

To perform this simple hack, follow the steps given below.

1. When the iPod Nano has been plugged into the computer, check “Enable disk use” in iTunes

2. Open My Computer then go into the iPod Nano,  Open Folder Options and Enable hidden folders, go into the iPod_Control and then into Device

3. Important: Don’t forget to make a backup of IconState.plist and save it anywhere on your computer, open the original file with Notepad or any other text editor after you’ve made the backup and this is what you will see:

4. In this tutorial, James Whelton has removed the SBPhotos part of the corresponding string and deleted the SBAlbums and SBGenres, however please keep in mind that by performing this procedure, you’re not actually deleting these applications but just removing their visibility from the system.

5. Save this file.

6. SyncTug it: hold down the minus volume button and lock button at the same time and as soon as it begins to reboot (screen flashes black for a moment),  unplug the iPod cable from it.

7. When the iPod Nano has booted up, you will notice that the Photos and Genres app are missing and there is a space before the Settings app.

As you see that this is fairly simple and the same ‘SyncTug’ technique can be used on the iPodSettings.xml file to makes wallpaper changes etc. In case something goes wrong, just connect the iPod Nano to the computer and replace IconStat.plist with the backup that was created earlier and SyncTug, and even if that does not work, simple restore your device through iTunes. However do note that if you try to press down on an icon and move it, the device will do a quick reset as it would not be able to make sure why a blank space exists, however the iPod will sync perfectly fine in iTunes and will retain this hack.
