9to5mac may have brought something rather interesting regarding the iPhone 5 to light. Walt Mossberg conducted an interview with Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer at the Carnegie Hall in New York City, which was a part of the JapanNYC festival. There, it looks like Sir Stringer mistakenly let slip, whilst telling that their camera image sensor facility in Sendai was affected by the tsunami, that "getting image sensors to Apple will be delayed" Intrigued? Hit the jump for more details.

Apple iPhone 5

The WSJ adds:

Early on, he raised the irony of Sony supplying camera components for Apple devices. It “always puzzles me,” he said. “Why would I make Apple the best camera?”

It is unclear what devices he was talking about as Sony isn’t known to supply key camera components, known as image sensors, to Apple; A Sony spokeswoman declined to comment and an Apple spokesperson couldn’t be reached for comment.

Right now, Sony is not a parts supplier for Apple. OmniVision is the company that currently provides 5 megapixel camera modules for the iPhone 4. Does this mean that Sony is behind the previously rumoured 8 megapixel camera for the iPhone 5? Because the words come straight from the CEO of Sony himself, its hard to doubt the legitimacy of this claim. Is this the reason why the iPhone 5 is being delayed?

However, there is a possibility that Sony might be producing image sensors for the seventh generation iPod nano.

Whatever the case may be, we'll be the first to let you know about any new updates on the forthcoming iPhone 5. Remember: WWDC 2011 has sold out.
