The new Wordpress version i.e. Wordpress 2.6 was released this morning and I am happy to you inform you that it brings a lot of new features and unique functionality just like all previous Wordpress versions.

There are no considerable changes in the admin theme but the overall usability has been tweaked a lot to provide the best blogging experience along with minor changes related to security.

Some of the amazing features of Wordpress 2.6 are:

Post Revisions - Bloggers can now keep a track of all changes being made to their posts and page with the new post revisions feature just like the one found in Google Docs.
Wordpress Turbo - Turbo mode makes use of Google Gears and allows a user to save admin files on local PC. This helps in lightening fast loading of admin menu in browser.
Press This! - The bookmarklet is back. It enables for easy posting of content from other social networking sites like Digg, Delicious, YouTube etc.
Theme Preview - Now blog admins can preview themes for their blog before making them live to their audience. This feature was previously provided by a plugin but has now been brought to the core.

Track Blog Visitors in Real-Time in Wordpress

While searching for some new plugins in the Wordpress Plugins Database I came across a new plugin called Wassup which claims to track blog visitors in real time and provides detailed traffic statistics.

There are other plugins of this kind such as Wordpress Live (reviewed by us) and Firestats which I have tried before but sadly none of them lived up to my expectations.

However, Wassup has got some amazing features and an excellent interface that even beats professional traffic monitoring apps like Woopra. The best part is that it integrates within your Wordpress installation and records all entries to the database.

Below are some of the great features of this plugin:

Real-time visitor tracking.
Real-time graph plotting based on traffic.
Detailed statistics about online visitors including search engine bots, spam-bots and real users.

Wordpress Goes Turbo with Google Gears

Discussing some features of the upcoming Wordpress 2.6 I highlighted that it will be making use of Google Gears. Sadly it was not meant for offline blogging rather to speed up file loading process in Wordpress.

The good news is that Wordpress.com users can already make use of this feature, now officially known as “Turbo”.

To enable it, login to your Wordpress.com blog dashboard and click the Turbo link on the position illustrated. It will prompt you to download Google Gears extension, allow it and you are good to go.

This will speed up administration file loading process to a huge extent as now all files will be loaded locally from your PC. Google Gears currently works on Firefox versions 2 & 3 and Internet Explorer versions 6 & 7 and Safari 3 support is coming soon.

Self hosted Wordpress users will be able to make use of this feature in the upcoming Wordpress 2.6

Wordpress 2.6 Does not Feature Offline Blogging

Almost a week ago I published some upcoming Features of Wordpress 2.6 which included Google Gears Support.

Including me, most of the other bloggers assumed that Google Gears support for Wordpress 2.6 means it will probably feature Offline Blogging however the assumption was quite wrong as revealed by blogger Amit at Digital Inspiration today.

Google Gears support is being added to Wordpress 2.6 for managed offline storage and not for offline blogging. This will improve the loading speed as all static admin interface content (images, css, javascript etc) will now be loaded locally instead of the web server on which the blog is hosted. More information on this feature can be tracked on Wordpress Trac.

This is still a very good new feature that will improve Wordpress performance but not having Offline Blogging support is a big turn off for some bloggers like me.

Today, on May 27th, one of my beloved and favorite blogging system turns 5. I have been using Wordpress for over almost 2 years now and since then it has rocked my world.

No other blogging system provides the ease of usability and flexible design choices such as Wordpress does and I am proud to say that my experience with Wordpress has so far been amazing and full of joy.

Recently I used Wordpress as a CMS to make my official University website and I was amazed to discover the wide range of functions it offers. Luckily my site got selected and for this I heartily thank Wordpress.

How to Display Category Specific Content in Wordpress

One thing I love about Wordpress is the great flexibility it offers in terms of designing custom themes and for this all the credit goes to Wordpress Template Tags.

Recently I ran into a problem where I wanted to monetize the posts in my Gadgets category with TTZmedia ads while keeping the normal Google Adsense ads on all other posts. This is when I found the in_category template function which lets you display category specific content in Wordpress.

The function is simple and very easy to use. Just use it in the Loop on any template file and it should work file.

This can be helpful to monetize posts from certain categories with specific ads and can also be used to display information about a particular category.

Wordpress 2.6 Features and Demo Site

Its finally time to look forward to the next version of Wordpress i.e. Wordpress 2.6 as it will introduce some very interesting features and usability improvements.

Wordpress Expert has a good list of features in Wordpress 2.6 which I have summarized below.

Bookmarklet: Remember the Wordpress Bookmarklet? It is coming back to Wordpress in version 2.6 with a new and improved functionality.
Post Word Count: This feature is available for Wordpress.com users and has good chances of making into Wordpress 2.6 too.
Shift-Click Checkbox Selection: In Wordpress 2.6 you will be able to select a range of posts, comments etc using the Shift-Click hack.
Post Revisions: Wiki-style revisions management for blog posts.
Google Gears Support: Probably the most interesting feature yet is the Google Gears Support for Wordpress 2.6. This will enable users to write posts even in offline mode.
Identicons: Choose gravatars for those who don’t have one.

Since Wordpress 2.5 a new security feature has been introduced which is known as the Wordpress Security Key. Most users don’t know the exact function of Seucurity Key and how to use it.

Below I have answered some of the frequently asked questions about Wordpress Seucirty Key which can help users with security of their blog.

What is Security Key?

It is a hashing salt that is not readable through the database or in more easy words the Wordpress Security Key is a unique phrase which causes better encryption of information stored in the user’s cookies.

Does Wordpress support Security Key?

Yes! as of Wordpress 2.5 and onwards, Wordpress now supports the use of a Security Key to make your blog more safe and secure.

Can I enable Security Key in versions prior to Wordpress 2.5?

No! this new optional entry was released with Wordpress 2.5 so there is no way to enable it in versions prior to Wordpress 2.5

Can Security Key be one of my Passwords?

Yes! but make sure its really long and very hard. Unless otherwise you would not only risk the security of your blog but also risk the security of your other online accounts which use the same password.

How can I generate a good and long Security Key?

Simply use the Wordpress Secret Key Generator.

Do I need to remember the Security Key?

Absolutely not! Its a random key and is used only to make the information stored in the user’s cookies more secure. You don’t need to remember it or write it down.

Where to put the Wordpress Security Key?

Once you have generated a Security Key using the Wordpress Secret Key Generator, open wp-config.php and paste it there.

I hope I am not exaggerating here but in my 2 years experience with Wordpress I must have used over a 100 different Wordpress plugins, each with unique feature and functionality but unfortunately none were focused on security. Wordpress is a very secure script but nevertheless there are always security loopholes which make ones blog vulnerable and open to remote attacks.

WP Security Scan is a Wordpress plugin that provides a lot of features based on security. The plugin scans your WordPress installation for security vulnerabilities and suggests corrective actions.

5 Steps To Make Your Posts More Professional

Ever wondered or raised your eyebrow when reading posts on established blogs, thinking how professional they are? You always wanted to have posts as professional as them in your blog too, don’t you? If yes, continue reading, as I’m telling you the method which you can follow to make your blog posts more professional and easy for your readers to read.

These types of posts are also social media friendly and people like it more. So without further ado, let me take you to the 5 steps which will make your posts more professional if done correctly.

Make A Synopsis First
Add (a) Nice Picture(s)
Insert Quotes Wherever Needed
Format The Post Properly
Proof Read Before You Hit The Publish Button

Now you know what the post is all about and I’m not going to leave you with that. Let me elaborate each point to you so that you can understand them better and apply it on your blog posts.

1. Make a Synopsis First

Synopsis is nothing but an abstract. It gives your readers a clear view of what they will be reading in the post. You can see an example for that in this post itself. What I have done above by listing the 5 points is called synopsis. This will help your blog readers in many ways. The readers those who are in a hurry can read the synopsis and leave and come back later to read the full post. Also it gives your readers a summary of what they will read in the post. If the post is not targeted towards them, they will know it at first and can save time.

2. Add (a) Nice Picture(s)

A picture is worth a thousand words. It will add spice to the post and make it more social media friendly. No one will want to read pages and pages of content. Surely, I don’t like to read such type of articles. Pictures give a look to your blog post. There is a skill involved in choosing the best picture for your post. If you master it, you have an added advantage in social media. If you are not able to find the best pictures, ask one of your friends to do it. Don’t add an ugly picture or an irrelevant picture. It will degrade the quality of the post.

3. Insert Quotes Wherever Needed

Adding quotes of famous people will make your blog post look more professional. You can also invent your own quote, though this needs a little creativity and experience. I normally mention quotes by famous people and rarely write my own. Say, you are writing a post on creativity, you can add quotes like:

Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way. – Edward de Bono

4. Format The Post Properly

Formatting is another skill and this is something every blogger should have. If you are not formatting your posts properly, I’m not going to read your post. It makes your post look bad and gives your blog an unprofessional look. Bold the things which are to be bolded and italicize the things which need to be italicized. Don’t write everything in a single paragraph. Split it into multiple paragraphs and give them a heading each.

5. Proof Read Before You Hit The Publish Button

Proof reading is something which I stress on almost every article that I write about writing/blogging. This is a very important step. But people don’t do it most of the times. Would you like to see mistakes in the articles written by big bloggers? Or would you like to see mistakes in your favorite author’s books? It is the same case here. Your blog readers don’t want to see mistakes in your articles too. Proof read your post once or twice before hitting the publish button.

I have made every single point clear (did I?). Here’s once again a review of what is said in the post.

Fluency Admin Theme for Wordpress 2.5

I just upgraded this blog to Wordpress 2.5 today and I can’t express the extent to which I was disappointed. The new admin theme is a total turn-off and the overall usability experience of Wordpress has taken a step backward instead of heading up in a new direction.

I was so much frustrated with the new Wordpress 2.5 color scheme that I had to Google in hope for finding a better admin theme plugin and to my surprise, Fluency admin theme was there all along to save me.

Fluency admin theme for Wordpress gives your blog admin panel a new look and design that is not the best but is still far more better than the default admin panel theme.

Its hard to imagine what made the Wordpress developers include the new admin theme while dumping the old one but I guess its something we should get used to now as this new admin theme is not going to change for long.

Fluency is a dark colored theme that arranges elements of your admin panel in a more organized manner. This also helps you concentrate more on writing as the theme gives your mind a peaceful sensation (which is highly needed while writing a new blog post)

If you have already upgraded to Wordpress 2.5 then you should definitely give this admin theme a try. To use this theme simply download, upload to plugins directory and activate it through the plugins manager.

Sizlopedia Tech Talk (March 2008)

As time passes on, it becomes really hard to compete with other technology blogs as basically all cover up the same stories and articles. But here at Sizlopedia I always try to spice up things a little bit by adding a personal touch to stories and articles. Also now that I have finally reached my 4th semester of Engineering, it is really becoming hard to cope with my university work/assignments and blogging but I never plan to give up.

March 2008 made the 14th successful month of Sizlopedia as a blog which has been struggling to create a difference in the blogosphere. While I was not so active at Sizlopedia in March, I learned quite a few new things about social networks and become a Twitter addict. I also switched to Linux (Ubuntu) and gave up Windows forever.

Surprising in March, Chitika helped Sizlopedia make more money than Kontera ever did in a month. However in April I plan to try the new Kontera Hybrid ads as I have been personally invited by Kontera to try them out.

Upgrade to Wordpress 2.5 Final

Finally the full and final version of Wordpress 2.5 has been released and its time for an upgrade for all of the Wordpress users. Celebrating the release of this new version, the Wordpress creators have also redesigned Wordpress.org to match the look and feel of the new admin panel in Wordpress 2.5

Wordpress 2.5 has been on the roadmap for about 6 months and is latest stable release so far. The most noticable features in this version are: multi-file uploading, one-click plugin upgrades, built-in galleries, customizable dashboard, salted passwords and cookie encryption, media library, a WYSIWYG that doesn’t mess with your code, concurrent post editing protection and full-screen writing.

The new built-in galleries feature is something worth trying out. Users can make gallery out of the photos and images they upload by using a simple gallery function call in posts or pages. There are other goodies in Wordpress 2.5 for developers like inline documentation, database optimization and secure cookies.

Well! in case you haven’t heard about it already, Matt published a post 10 hours ago on the Wordpress Blog giving a sneak peek into the new Wordpress version and highlighting some of the new Wordpress 2.5 features.

The new Wordpress comes packed with a lot of new features and introduces a very odd-colored admin theme (Orange with Light blue). It is similar to the admin theme we saw on the Wordpress Demo Site which I highly disliked and so did most of the Wordpress fans.

For the users who think that the new admin theme is very much disappointing, they should take a look at the new features that Wordpress 2.5 has to offer. The new Dashboard is focused on the most relevant tasks at hand: a quick summary of what’s published and scheduled for publication, the latest comments and incoming links, blog stats, and WordPress updates and news. You can even add your own RSS feeds now, Wow!

The Wordpress navigation has been cut down to provide only the relevant options and task management options. The new Write page is the one that brings the most new features. Now there is a full-screen mode to ignore distractions while writing, live permalink view, Add media buttons and lots more.

One interesting feature is that you can not only share your own custom admin themes now but you can also switch back to the “classic” admin theme through the options thus getting rid of the terrible orange-blue.

Download the Wordpress 2.5 RC1 to try some of the new features and provide feedback. The final release is no more then a few days away.

Fast and Easy Posting using Wordpress Bookmarklet

I am sure that most of you who use Wordpress as their blogging CMS would have probably seen the Wordpress Bookmarklet at the bottom of their “Write Post” page.

The interesting fact is that almost all Wordpress users know or have seen the Wordpress Bookmarklet but only very few know its actual use. Today I decided to play with some of the hidden/less-known features of Wordpress and was amazed to find out that how beneficial the Wordpress Bookmarklet can really be.

It can be used for fast and easy posting and in case you use Wordpress as a microblogging platform then this is the best Wordpress treat you can ever have. Here is how to use it:

Under the “Wordpress Bookmarklet” section of your “Write Post” page, click and drag the link and save it on your bookmarks toolbar. Now whenever you visit a page that you want to blog about, simply highlight some text from the page and click the Wordpress Bookmarklet in your bookmarks toolbar (This will automatically copy the text and heading of the page to your Wordpress editor). Hit Publish and enjoy!

That saved your time and also helped you publish your article within a matter of seconds. I don’t know how many Wordpress users already know about this but it was a very interesting feature of Wordpress that I recently discovered.

Sizlopedia Tech Talk (February 2008)

Sizlopedia is all about Technology, Computers, Gadgets, How To’s, Softwares, Internet, Windows Tips and Tricks and Web 2.0 reviews. I hope my readers understand that all articles, posts and every single piece of information posted at Sizlopedia is to help users and make an impact on the blogosphere.

In the start of February 2008, I did not post any blog stats for the month of January 2008 because of some undisclosed reasons. This disappointed a lot of readers and I have been getting emails asking me to continue posting the blog statistics series. So after much consideration I have decided to continue the series with a different name now called Sizlopedia Tech Talk.

Wordpress 2.5 Demo Site

Lately Wordpress creators decided to skip the release of Wordpress 2.4 which was due this February and instead planned to incorporate all of its features into the next release i.e. Wordpress 2.5. It is expected that Wordpress 2.5 will release somewhere in March but most of the bloggers are too restless to test out the new features.

To help bloggers overcome their emotions of curiosity, Chris Johnston has announced the availability of a public WordPress 2.5 Demo Site. The cool part is that it will host the most latest and up-to-date version of Wordpress 2.5 until its official release. This way developers and keen bloggers wouldn’t have to setup the alpha and beta releases on their localhost to test all of the new features, they can just use the online demo site instead.

The new Wordpress has a sky-blue/orange color scheme. If you login to the demo site, you will notice a rearrangement of widgets and menus and a little bit of new features.

Personally I did not like the new interface at all except for the Post Editor which is a bit modified and more user-friendly. The color scheme is worse than the previous one. Plus you will see a rearrangement of information menus which looks just senseless and unattractive.

I hope they make it better before they plan to release it finally because I simply love Wordpress and I don’t want a reason not-to-upgrade.
