All the testing has been done and according to him, it will work with any iPhone on the Firmware 3.1.2, even those with the 05.11.07 baseband.

He will be releasing the tool in a couple of hours which will then be available through the Blackra1n.app. Below are some of the instructions posted by GeoHotz on his blog for users who want to use Blacksn0w to unlock the iPhone. Only those with a iPhone 3G or a 3GS should attempt.

1. Update the iPhone to Firmware 3.1.2 using iTunes.
2. Download Blackra1n RC3 through this link.
3. Run the app and click make it ra1n.
4. After the iPhone reboot, run the blackra1n.app, tap on Sn0w and install blacksn0w.

For those who already have the blackra1n.app:

You will see Icy replaced by an option "ra1n". Install this to upgrade your app. After upgrading, run blackra1n.app again. You will see "sn0w". Install this, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.

Note: GeoHotz plans to release the new Blackra1n RC3 at Noon EST. Blacksn0w will also be available at Cydia shortly after it's official release.

But a recent discovery by Gizmodo suggests otherwise and provides enough evidence for us to speculate over whether or not Apple has any plans to release the 4th Generation iPhone earlier than it's expected release in summer 2010?

The image below, unveiled by China Ontrade, is being claimed as the real image of the 4th Generation iPhone and the fact that the same company was able to leak real the images of iPhone 3GS only a month prior to it's release brings upon the interesting debate of whether Apple is releasing the new iPhone in a month's time or so?

Given Apple's records, we know that the manufacturing only starts only a month or so prior to the official release of the product. So could this be the real deal?

Also the fact that the 3GS was nothing more than a performance bump to the iPhone 3G and the growing market-share of Android phones, these are perhaps two of the most important points that may have led into making Apple release a new iPhone early enough. Thoughts?

This is big news for all users out there since they would be able to unlock the iPhone recently purchased from an Apple store with the new baseband pre-loaded.

Blacksn0w would be able to be used once the device has been Jailbroken using Blackra1n which is an all-in-one Jailbreaking tool released by GeoHotz, compatible with all models of the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Once the device has been Blackra1n'd, it will then be able to be unlocked with Blacksn0w and be used with any carrier.

The video posted below shows a demo of GeoHotz making a phone-call with his iPhone on the baseband 05.11.07 through an unsupported carrier (T-mobile).

There is no ETA for the release of the Blacksn0w tool by GeoHotz but we make a guess that it will be released on the 4th of November. Keep all fingers crossed for this one.

According to a post on his blog, he has been successful in trying to execute an arbitrary code on an iPhone with the baseband 05.11.07 which is currently not unlock-able.

It actually means that the iPhones running on 3.1.x firmware out-of-the-box will soon be able to be unlocked and be used with any carrier other than AT&T. Currently the unlock solution provided by the iPhone dev team requires one to have an iPhone that has been Jailbroken previously.

This new milestone will help those iPhone users who might have accidentally updated to the latest firmware and may not have been able to preserve the baseband. And also the ones who recently purchased a new iPhone with the latest baseband.

GeoHot will be releasing a tool named Blacksnow that would be taking care of the unlock. This is by far the most complicated unlock as it breaks into the baseband.

As soon as the tool is release, we will provide detailed instructions on how to use it to unlock the iPhone on baseband 05.11.07

Today, through an intimation on RedmondPie, we are pleased to inform that the same utility can be used by users with a Jailbroken and Unlocked iPhone to enable Push Notifications on the iPhone Firmware 3.1.2

Here are the steps to follow:

1. De-sync/Remove all apps from the iPhone that support the Push Notifications feature.
2. Go to Cydia and add the repo at the URL: http://cydia.iphoneil.net
3. Open the search and look for, 'Push Fix' and install it.
4. Reboot the device, and sync back all the apps with Push Notification.
5. Turn on Notifications through the Settings app.

That's it! The Push-Fix is actually a behind-the-scenes app so you really don't need to configure it, it will fix the Push Notifications all by itself.

Only users with a Jailbroken and/or Unlocked iPhone should make use of this utility as the Push Notifications works flawlessly with an Official carrier.

The process will work only on those iPhones which have been Jailbroken at least once on a previous firmware. So if you bought a new iPhone and plan to follow through the guide, there is a good chance that your time will go in vain.

First download all the files that go with your iPhone model and then join them together using HJSplit (for Windows) and Split & Concat (for Mac). Once all the files have been joined together into a single ZIP file, extract the archive to get the custom IPSW.

Now connect the iPhone to the computer, open iTunes 9 and click 'Restore' while holding SHIFT key (on Windows) and OPTION key (on Mac) and select the Custom IPSW. That's it. To Unlock, just use Ultrasnow (Instructions available here, starting from Step-3).

This tutorial would work for any user on a Mac or Windows.

Only users with a previously Jailbroken iPhone 3GS (on an old firmware) should attempt to follow this tutorial as it does not work for those who have an iPhone 3GS with Firmware 3.1 out-of-the-box. The tutorial will help to Jailbreak and Unlock your iPhone 3GS on Firmware 3.1.

The new PwnageTool 3.1.3 only has support for the iPhone 3GS and even the iPod 2G, but the catch is that only users with a previously Jailbroken iPhone 3GS would be able to update their phones to Firmware 3.1 and the tool does not have support for ones with Firmware 3.1 out of the box. Likewise for the iPod 2G.

The unlock method of iPhone 2G is as much same as that of iPhone 3G but more safe, in case you make a flaw you can easily recover and unlock your iPhone again which is not so easy in case of iPhone 3G and specially the new iPhone 3GS. Follow the steps with open eyes, and trust me you won't even need to ask for help in the comments.

Please backup with iTunes before trying this. This process only works on Mac for now, no Bootloader files were needed during the unlock process.

1. Grab and download the Pwnage Tool 3.1 for Mac OS X.
2. Make sure to update to the latest iTunes 9 before attempting this unlock.
3. Download the 3.1 Firmware for iPhone 3G and save it on your desktop.
4. Run the Pwnage Tool 3.1 and select iPhone and click next.

As instructed by the dev team, since the Apple's update process is a little complex for those on the iPhone 3GS so the current Pwnage Tool 3.1 for Mac OS X will only be able to Jailbreak the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 1G and hence unlock both the iPhone 2G and 3G using Ultrasnow.

Here are some important points mentioned by the iPhone dev team before using PwnageTool 3.1:

• If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw.
• If you have an iPhone 1st Gen then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release.
• This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
• PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

For now the iPod Touch 2nd, 3rd Generation and the iPhone 3GS are not supported. A Redsnow tool will soon be available for both Mac OS X and Windows.

A handful of new features are available in this new OS update, both for the users of iPhone and iPod Touch. Here are some.

• Apps organization through iTunes
• Genius recommendation for Apps
• Save video from Mail to Camera roll.
• Better saving options for video clips in 3GS.
• Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe.
• Anti-phising features for Safari on iPhone.

And a lot of more. And also whats rumored about this new OS update is that it updates your iPhone baseband, thus making it permanently locked.

So unless you have an iPhone with contract, a wise deal would be not to update to the iPhone OS 3.1 until the dev team comes out with a solution. iPod Touch users can update directly however.

Update: To download the firmware, follow on to the procedures for iPhone 2G or iPhone 3G.

So to your delight, we have discovered an app in Cydia that would fix Push Notifications on your iPhone instantly. Its called Push Fix and all you need to do is install the app, no more tutorials or hacks to follow.

The app is not available in the default Cydia repositories so you will need to add http://cydia.iphoneil.net to the list of sources and then refresh. Once done, simply find and install 'Push Fix' and reboot your iPhone. Now make sure the Notifications are turned on in the Settings app and try it with any app from the App store that supports Push Notifications, such as Beejive IM.

From what we have tested ourselves so far, Push Notifications is a great and innovative new technology by Apple that helps you receive notifications from apps without having to ruin any battery life over background apps but the thing is that it comes with a price, which is that it runs on the cloud.

As a large community of the iPhone already seems to be having problems with this new technology, its hard to say how Apple will manage to make it survive in the long-run, or perhaps Apple will be left with no choice but to look further into enabling background apps in future versions of iPhone OS.

Many users have experienced that their iPhone gets more hot than usual when extensive graphics applications are used.

Apple has addressed to this issue and provided some guidelines that might help the iPhone 3GS owners to prevent their phone from overheating. Here are some of them:

• Make sure to operate the iPhone in environment where the temperature is between between -20º and 45º C.
• Never the leave the iPhone in the car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.
• Don't use the iPhone under direct sunlight for extended amounts of time.

The same precautions apply to the iPhone 3G too.

Thankfully! there is a mechanism in the iPhone that warns you whenever the temperature of your device rises above the threshold.

An unlock tool for the iPhone 3GS has been much anticipated by Apple fans since its release and even though there was a tool named Purplerain to unlock the iPhone 3GS, the fact that it wasn't backup up by the iPhone Dev Team didn't bring relief to many hearts.

However! The new Redsnow fully supports unlock for iPhone 3GS with any carrier running on iPhone 3.0 and can be downloaded at ThePirateBay.

Latest version is now dubbed as Redsnow 0.8. Once downloaded, follow the following steps:

1. Download the iPhone 3GS firmware provided by Apple [Part1 | Part2]
2. Extract the rar-archive with WinRar or UnrarX such that it makes up into one file.
3. Open Redsnow and follow the onscreen instructions to Jailbreak the device.
4. Once Jailbroken, fire-up Cydia and add repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com
5. Now search for 'Ultrasnow' and install it.
6. Restart your iPhone 3GS.

Now I don't really have an iPhone 3GS (at least for now?) but I am pretty sure this method will work out for most of you. Please let us know in the comments if it works.

As always, The iPhone Dev Team has cooked up something and come up with a way to enable Push Notifications on unlocked iPhone 3.0 as mentioned in one of their Twitter status.

So here is how to enable Push Notifications on your iPhone.

1. For Windows, download WinSCP and for Mac, download Cyberduck and install the software.
2. Install OpenSSH and MobileTerminal on your iPhone through Cydia.
3. Connect the iPhone to computer and make sure iTunes is not running.
4. Open WinSCP/Cyberduck and enter the following credentials to connect.
   • Hostname: IP address of your iPhone.
   • User name: root
   • Password: alpine
   • Port: 22
5. After logging in, navigate to /Private/var/Keychains directory.
6. Download PushFix.zip, extract it and transfer the files nimble and inject to the directory in step#5.
7. Right-click on each of the two files you just transferred, click on Properties and change the permission to 755.
8. Make a backup of keychain-2.db file inside the current directory.
9. Now download Certs.zip and extract the following files into the same directory.
   • youtube-cert.bin
   • youtube-key.bin
   • push-cert.bin
   • push-key.bin
10. Open MobileTerminal on iPhone and write the command cd /Private/var/Keychains
11. Now write ./inject and execute it such that a new keychain-2.db file is now created automatically.

Thats most of it! Just install any Push capable device to make use of Push Notifications. Also, Settings app will now show a new tab for 'Notifications'.

Note: IP address if your iPhone can be found under the DHCP settings of the WiFi network that your iPhone is connected to.

Earlier we announced that we iPhone users would now require a new tool to unlock iPhone 3G known as Ultrasnow and the tool has finally been released.

For those who want to catch up fast, follow the below procedure to unlock the iPhone 3G on Firmware 3.0.

1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0.
2. Jailbreak the device using PwnageTool or Redsnow.
3. Run Cydia to install Ultrasnow.
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com
5. Search for Ultrasnow and install it.
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G.

Please note that this method is only suitable to work with iPhone 3G which was previously unlocked with YellowSnow. And the method is not recommended to unlock an iPhone 3GS.

As compared to PwnageTool, Redsnow is a much powerful and easy-to-use utility to Unlock the iPhone 2G and works both on Windows and Mac. The latest Redsnow is now capable to Unlock the iPhone 2G running on Firmware 3.0.

To unlock the Firmware 3.0 on iPhone 2G with Redsnow, follow the instructions:

1. Download the Redsnow tool (For Win | For Mac)
2. Extract the archive and run the utility.
3. Grab the iPhone Firmware 3.0 for your corresponding device.
4. Also download the bootloader files, bl39.bin and bl46.bin
5. Proceed with the on-screen instructions on the utility.
6. Enter DFU mode and restore to Unlock.

Thats pretty much all of it. If you are simply planning to Jailbreak an iPod Touch, you will need the corresponding firmware and bootloader files are not required. For an alternative, also check out our hack on manually Unlocking the Firmware 3.0 for iPhone 2G.

Note: The above method even works to Jailbreak an iPhone 3G but it won't be able to Unlock it until Ultrasnow for Firmware 3.0 is released offiicially.
