Canonical is planning to surpass Mac OS X in the next coming two years but without a revolutionary change in the Ubuntu GUI it is close to impossible. Will has made a good attempt by designing some of the best mockups of Intrepid Ibex ever and with such a design, Ubuntu can easily take over Mac OS X soon enough.

Adobe Air applications are multiplying in number day by day. The reason for this great expansion is the flexibility of the Adobe Air platform which supports light-weight, simple and multi-platform apps.

Today we have another Adobe Air app in review, called Apprise.

Apprise is an Adobe Air RSS Reader app which comes with a twist. Unlike ReadAir, Apprise also lets you easily share links to your favorite articles and stories direct from within your RSS reader.

It currently supports Twitter and AIM integration which makes it easy for the user to share links right away.

Some other cool features of Apprise Reader are:

Drag and drop. Easily drag and drop (or copy and paste) articles to share them via email.

Realtime search across all feeds.

OPML import and export.

Folders. Organize your feeds any way you want.

Automatic categorization by author and topic.

Apprise is a 100% open-source app and the source code can be found on Google Code. It is currently in BETA and compatible only with Windows and OS X. Linux support will be added soon.

To install the app, visit the Apprise Reader official website.

VLC Media Player is a portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. One of the best thing about VLC Media player is that it can play incomplete, unfinished, or damaged video downloads before the files have been fully downloaded.

Another good feature of VLC Player is that you can change its look by applying skins. Follow the post and I will teach you how to make your VLC Player look like Windows Media Player 11.

The very first thing you should do is download the Windows Media Player 11 skin from VLC Player’s skin library.

To install this skin on Ubuntu, Hit Alt+F2 which will bring up a dialog box and type this command:

vlc -I skins2

While Windows has got nearly more than a thousand tweaking utilities, Ubuntu Linux has got one too and its known as Ubuntu Tweak.

Ubuntu Linux is no doubt the most user-friendly and easy to use Linux distro but when it comes to tweaking and playing with the hidden OS settings, the Terminal can prove to be quite dangerous. Thats where Ubuntu Tweak jumps in to save the day by providing a GUI for tweaking these settings.

Ubuntu Tweak provides users with options to configure the OS the way they like. It gives access to hidden system settings and preferences such as Computer, Startup, Desktop, Personal, System etc which can be optimized to ones needs and requirements.

It can also control and tweak Compiz Fusion settings. It is a free light-weight application that is being developed rapidly.

At first I found it quite difficult to use Pidgin Internet Messenger on Ubuntu Linux. Even though it allows signing into MSN, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk, it still doesn’t give me the real feel of an instant messenger.

After a little research on the Internet, I was sad to find out that Microsoft does not provide a Linux version of MSN. But thanks to following two softwares you can enjoy MSN instant messaging on Linux just as you would on Windows.

KMess tops the list for me as its interface closely resembles to that of Windows Live Messenger. It features offline messages, Winks, Rich text chats, Emoticons and much more.

The other software that you can try is aMSN. It has all features of KMess and some other additional features such as Webcam support, Tabbed conversations and Voice Clips.

Otherwise you can always try installing original Windows Live Messenger using Wine on Linux. However there is no guarantee if this will work or not.

To install KMess and aMSN simply visit their respective websites or use the universe package repository in Synaptic Package Manager in Ubuntu.

Softpedia has got some good screens of this new version some of which I would like to share with all Linux lovers.

Technically we won’t be getting many new features in Ubuntu 8.10 except for a whole new UI redesign, a new Kernel, Firefox 3.0 final and some other software updates.

More screenshots can be viewed at Softpedia.

One thing I am sure of is that Ubuntu 8.10 will probably get a new wallpaper as Ibex is a mountain goat while the wallpaper you see in the screenshots above shows a Heron which is for Ubuntu 8.04.

As I am back to blogging after a long break so I thought it would be better to start off by sharing a sizzling cool utility that is both fun, useful and sexy.

Hot-Babe for Windows and Linux is a small graphical utility which displays the system activity in a very special way. As your CPU heats up, the girl begins to undress.

Above you can see the girl in full-dressed state i.e. when the CPU is idle. As the CPU activity increases, she undresses indicating that your CPU usage is going high. Below you can see the girl at 50% CPU activity.

And of course at 100% CPU activity you know what happens! (not for minors).

A very fun utility to graphically monitor your CPU performance. It is available for both Linux and Windows. Testing it was fun as I kept on opening more and more applications to increase CPU usage.

Note: The utility is NSFW so try it as your own risk. If you own a shared PC, I suggest you to NOT try the utlity at all.

Ubuntu is relatively a new operating system and Windows users who want to try Ubuntu have a lot questions which need to be answered. For such users I have a perfect Firefox extension thats going to make it easy for them to find questions and answers related to Ubuntu of any sort.

The extension, known as Ubuntu Forums Menu, adds additional navigation menu for Ubuntu Forums via main-menu and context to Firefox.

As Ubuntu Forums are currently the most active and only platform to search for Ubuntu related question/answers therefore this extension can come quite handy for new Ubuntu users.

Good for us, the Beta of OpenOffice.org 3.0 has finally been released and is now available for download. For all of you who want to know what OpenOffice is? OpenOffice is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is, by now, the best alternative to other commercial office software suite like Microsoft Office.

Courtesy: DownloadSquad

The release candidate for OpenOffice.org 3.0 is expected somewhere in July while the final version is coming no earlier than September 2008. The most immediately visible change to OpenOffice.org 3.0 is the new “Start Centre”, new fresh-looking icons, and a new zoom control in the status bar.

OpenOffice 3.0 Beta Features

Here is a little list of all the new features in OpenOffice 3.0 Beta

Support for spreadsheet collaboration through workbook sharing.

Support the upcoming OpenDocument Format (ODF) 1.2 standard

Support for opening files created with MS-Office 2007 or MS-Office 2008 for Mac OS X (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx, etc.).

OpenOffice.org 3.0 will be the first version to run on Mac OS X without X11.

Plus there are tons of other new features. If you are a Ubuntu user you would be pleased to try out this new version as OpenOffice.org comes pre-installed in Hardy and all other Ubuntu flavors. OpenOffice.org 3.0 is still in beta so system crashes and bugs are expected.

Ubuntu is relatively a good Linux distribution when it comes to enhanced security however it must be kept in mind that no security solution is 100% unhackable and ever-lasting. You are already familiar with Firewall in Windows now its time to help you install and configure a Firewall in Ubuntu Linux in order to make your machine more safe and secure.

Firestarter is what we will be needing for managing and observing firewall in Ubuntu. Firestarter is a complete firewall tool for Linux machines. It features an easy to use firewall wizard to quickly create a firewall.

Using the program you can then open and close ports with a few clicks, or stealth your machine giving access only to a select few. The real-time hit monitor shows attackers probing your machine.

Install Firestarter

Firestarter can be installed in Ubuntu through the Terminal using the following command:

sudo apt-get install firestarter

or just click the link below to install Firestarter in Ubuntu as the following link makes use of apturl which allows you to install software in ubuntu by clicking a link

Install Firestarter

or if you are still not comfortable with all of the above installation methods, simply go to Synaptic Package Manager, find “firestarter” and mark for installation.

Configure Firestarter

Once Firestarter is downloaded, it will automatically run configuration settings for your Firewall. Simply leave the default values checked and you won’t face a problem.

Once Installed, Firestarter can be accessed from Applications → Internet → Firestarter

Hola! you successfully installed and configured a GUI-controllable Firewall on Ubuntu Linux. Now enjoy watching hackers hitting you in real-time!

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron has been giving me a good time lately except for the web browsing experience. Firefox 3 beta 5 is included in Ubuntu 8.04 final as the default web browser even though its not stable. Above all, its not even compatible with Wordpress 2.5 and will keep bugging you now and then with new problems.

So whats the solution? Either get Opera for Linux or get back the old and mighty Firefox 2. Many users think that as Firefox 3 beta 5 has been included in the final release of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy so probably there is no easy way to get rid of it and install Firefox 2 instead but in reality its very easy to do so.

Go to System → Administration → Software Sources and make sure you have enabled all software package repositories. Now open the Synaptic Package Manager and look for the following packages.

firefox

firefox-3.0

firefox-3.0-dev

firefox-3.0-gnome-support

Right click on all of these packages and “Mark for Removal”. Now find the following packages and right click to “Mark for Installation”

firefox-2

firefox-2-gnome-support

Click Apply once and then again click Apply. This will remove Firefox 3 beta 5 and will download and install Firefox 2. The web browser can then be accessed from Applications → Internet → Firefox 2 Web Browser

Believe it or not but the first thing I did after installing Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron on my laptop was finding a compatible Twitter client for Linux that works on Ubuntu. I could have used Twitter IM to post updates through Pidgin or Google Chat but that kills the fun of it.

I rushed to the Synaptic Package Manager hoping to find a Twitter client app right away but very unfortunately none were listed there. Then I did a little research and found some good Twitter clients for Linux that work on Ubuntu.

1. Twitux (download)

Twitux is a Twitter client for the Gnome desktop. The program features include view public, friends and mine timeline, send message, automatic login, add friend and system tray icon.

2. gTwitter (download)

gTwitter a simple GTK+ based application for Linux, designed to interact with Twitter web service. Its written using Mono/C# and some of GNOME dependant libraries. GUI is inspired by Mac client Twitterrific.

3. Spaz (download)

Spaz is a Twitter client for users who value free, open-source software, attractive design, and customizability. It is built entirely in XHTML and Javascript and can be styled using a custom CSS styling file. It is built on the Adobe AIR framework so to install it all you need to have is Adobe AIR on Ubuntu (See the end of the post for this tutorial)

4. Twhirl (download)

Twhirl is a desktop twitter client, based on the Adobe AIR platform. It is one of my favorite Twitter clients as it really very easy to use. Scroll down to see how to get this app working using Adobe AIR on Ubuntu.

5. TwitterFox (download)

TwitterFox is a Firefox Extension that displays updates from your friends and lets you update your status. This extension adds a tiny icon on the status bar that notifies you when your friends update their tweets. Also it has a small text input field to update your tweets. As Ubuntu already comes preinstalled with Firefox so installing this Twitter app is as easy as a pie.

6. Twitter Deskbar (download)

Twitter Deskbar is a Twitter app that integrates with the Gnome Deskbar and lets you post status updates right from your desktop. The installation requires you to have Deskbar widget for Gnome. For detailed instructions please use the download link provided.

7. Twitter Terminal

This is basically a hack for posting to Twitter using the Linux Terminal. You will need cURL ( a client for getting files from servers) to post to Twitter through the Terminal which can be installed using the following command:

sudo apt-get install curl

With cURL installed, you can post to Twitter from the terminal window by using the following syntax:

curl -u yourusername:yourpassword -d status="Your Message Here" http://twitter.com/statuses/update.xml

You will receive a response containing the XML coding for your post which acts as a confirmation that your post was submitted.

8. Alert Thingy (download)

Alert Thingy is basically an Adobe AIR app for FriendFeed but also works for Twitter as well. You can get status updates from your friends and can also post live status updates yourself.

All of these apps work brilliantly on Ubuntu so you are good to go with any one of these. For the apps requiring Adobe AIR you can install Adobe AIR on Ubuntu using one of our guides.

If you know anymore Twitter clients for Ubuntu, Please share in the comments.

Finally the long-awaited Linux distribution has come to life which aims to make life easier for all of the Linux and non-Linux users out there. The new Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron promises to provide a free and open-source platform which is not only packed with latest softwares but is also extremely easy to use too.

Last time I made a post on 10 Reasons Why Linux Ubuntu is Better than Windows which sparked a very controversial debate. This time I am trying my best not to target Windows rather just review Ubuntu 8.04 in itself and give you 10 reasons that will make you download and try Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

1. Long Term Support - After Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake, this is the next LTS (Long Term Support) release which means that long term support will be provided for the desktop edition (upto 3 years) and also for the server edition (upto 5 years).

2. Install Ubuntu within Windows - This new release gives you the option to install Ubuntu along side Windows all thanks to Wubi. No need to format your hard-disk for Linux now.

3. Operate more Safe & Secure - Even though Linux is already considered safe as compared to Windows, Hardy has been programmed to make it more secure and private.

4. Try it Live - Much like any other Ubuntu release, you can try Hardy Heron without even installing it or doing any changes to your current OS. This may seem an old feature to Linux users but for Windows users it can provide a whole new experience.

5. Search with Tracker - This new release of Ubuntu comes integrated with the new versin of Tracker which is a search system for Linux. This way you can find all your files and apps just like in Windows Vista.

6. New and Free Software - Hardy Heron also lets you taste some of the new applications and softwares for Linux. While open-source and free apps may not be a new thing for Linux users, what makes Hardy unique is that it comes integrated with all of these brilliant applications.

7. User Friendly Linux Distro - Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron boasts to be the most up-to-date and user-friendly Linux distribution. If you are used to operating Windows, there is no reason why you will find operating Ubuntu 8.04 any difficult.

8. Compiz 3D Effects - Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron has more to offer than just simple 3D Effects. Experience Compiz from within Hardy like never before. Work and browse in a 3D virtual world with some of the never-seen-before effects and animations.

9. Universal Device Support - In Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, every device like PSP, iPod, MP3 player etc works out of the box. You don’t need to worry about device drivers or device compatibility issues anymore as Hardy is there to take complete care of it.

10. Learn and Teach - Everyone uses Windows and Mac is too expensive for everyone to afford so give Ubuntu 8.04 a try. It is a new operating system with powerful enough features to compete with Windows. Learn it, teach it and spread the word.

Thats my say on why you should download and try Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. I myself strongly believe that living in a world without Windows is just impossible but there is always room to try something new and better. Especially with Wubi now you can experience Windows and Ubuntu side by side.

Download Ubuntu and Give it a try. It is the operating system that will power the future of home desktops.

At times where Linux provides a secure and healthy environment for users, it makes other things even more complicated and intricate. Despite being such a user-friendly operating system, it is not that easy to login to Ubuntu as a root user.

Root user has all the administrator privileges so whenever you need to edit system files or configuration from within Gnome, you will feel the need to login to Ubuntu as a root user. But the question is here is “How to login to Ubuntu as a root user?”

Just follow the steps below:

Open the terminal and type:

sudo passwd root

When you see the prompt that says “Enter new UNIX password”, enter the password you want for the root user and confirm it.

Type:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf

Locate the line that says “AllowRoot=false”. Change it to “AllowRoot=true”.

Save the file

Exit gedit, logout and then reboot.

I used the same method when I wanted to login as root user to edit configuration files of my graphics card and everything worked great. However the only issue in this case is that by logging to Ubuntu as root you are making your operating system more vulnerable.

For Ubuntu users it is recommended to use the account which they created on time of install and use the “sudo” command while in terminal to execute commands as root user.

The countdown for Ubuntu 8.04 finally begins today as now there are only 9 days to go for the official launch of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. But before Ubuntu lovers get their hands on Hardy, their biggest anticipation is about the new features and applications coming in Ubuntu 8.04.

Compiled below is a list of the top 10 new features to expect in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. Some of these features have already been introduced in Hardy beta while some are still to be introduced in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron stable.

1. Boot change – In the early version of Ubuntu, in the boot menu screen we have only one option to chose if we want give it a try or install it. It was called “Start or install Ubuntu”. Now when Live CD is booted automatically offers to chose your language, and you have two new options “Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer” and Install Ubuntu.

2. Xorg 7.3 – The new Xorg 7.3 is coming with Hardy Heron. This ability brings a new Screen Resolution utility that allows users to dynamically configure the resolution, refresh rate, and rotation of a second monitor. This will be particularly handy for laptop users that connect to a projector or external monitor.

3. Kernel– Ubuntu 8.04 also brings a new kernel 2.6.24.3 which comes packed with the “Completely Fair Scheduler” for improved interactive performance and dynticks support for power saving on the both desktop and laptop computers, and new fixes that have been merged in the last few months into the mainline kernel.

4. Gnome 2.22 - Hardy Heron brings you the latest and greatest Gnome 2.22 with lots of new features and improvements, such as a new Nautilus that uses GVFS as its backend. GVFS makes it possible to fix shortcomings of Nautilus such as the inability to restore files from trash, pause and undo file operations, and will make it possible to escalate user privileges for certain operations using PolicyKit for authentication. It also brings a significant performance boost to many operations.

5. PolicyKit - PolicyKit is now integrated in the administrative user interfaces. PolicyKit allows fine-grained control over user permissions and enhances usability and security, by allowing administrative applications to be run as a normal user and gaining extra privileges dynamically only for privileged operations instead of requiring the whole application to run as root.

6. New Applications

Seahorse – the new “sheriff in town”, set to manage your encryption keys.

Transmission – the default BitTorrent client.

FireFox 3 Beta 5 – replaced FireFox 2 and it is now the default browser in Ubuntu 8.04.

Vinagre – a brand-new VNC client, which makes connecting to single or multiple machines easy.

Brasero – the new CD/DVD burnung tool in Ubuntu Hardly Heron.

7. World Clock Applet – this clock can display time and weather in mutliple locations.

8. Firewall - Ubuntu 8.04 includes UFW (Uncomplicated Firewall), a new host-based firewall application configurable from the command line which is designed to make administering a firewall easier for end users while not getting in the way of network administrators. You can simply start firewall with sudo ufw enable.

9. Memory Protection - Secure Memory Management, will help defend against rootkits and other malicious code.

10. Windows users – Wubi new installation tool for Windows users. This tool will help Windows users easy install Ubuntu and still have Windows installed. Also here is the old umenu tool.

Some will love it, some will hate it, but that is what the Ubuntu developers prepared for the second LTS (Long Term Support) release of their 100% FREE operating system, Ubuntu Linux.

Installing a new program in Linux is no piece of cake. Either you have to use Add/Remove Applications or you might have to do it the hard way using the Terminal.

This is where Windows take the precedence as it allows one-click installation of programs and softwares. The good news is that it can also be done in Linux with a program called Apturl which allows you to install a program simply by clicking a link.

Now to make a link recognized as an install command, install Apturl using the command below:

sudo apt-get install apturl

Restart your web browser after the installation is complete. Now to make sure that Apturl is active and working, try clicking the bold link below and it should automatically prompt you to install the Gnome Main Menu (more info on the software can be found here)

Install Gnome Main Menu

As you can see that Apturl has helped your browser recognize commands through a link so this is a very useful tool for Ubuntu users. For those complaining about how insecure it is, they should know that Apturl only works with programs in your repositories (which are 100% safe).
