Google Chrome got its first major update late last night. This is the first time the minor version changed from 0.2 to 0.3. The update brings some bug fixes as well as enhancements to the overall user interface. But the major focus of the update was to resolve issues with various plugins.

According to the release notes for Google Chrome 0.3.154.0, the main problems addressed and fixed with this update are related to the Flash plugin. I had reported earlier about the issue on my previous review, and it seems like the developers listened to it. More specifically, the release notes highlight the following:

• Improve the performance and scrolling of plugins. This especially improves pages with multiple plugins playing video.
• Fixes plugins not playing when embedded in a third-party frame on a page.
• Fixes a problem where using Flash plugins could lock up Google Chrome and cause 100% CPU usage.

Other minor changes include enhancements to the UI (mostly in the options dialog) and some more streamlined search results with suggestions.

While this update is only availble to the developers, you can also take part in the developer community testing by opting to be a developer (you don’t actually have to develop anything). Just download this utility and choose Dev from the two options. Then click the Wrench > About Google Chrome, it will automatically detect the update and download it.

The developer folks behind GIMP have released new version of application today. GIMP 2.6 includes both some of major and minor changes to the UI, tools and plugins.

The visible change in the user interface is that toolbox menubar has been removed and merged with image window menu to give you the swift access to various options. Along with this it now gives you the ability to pan beyond the image border. The free select tool has been enhanced with the support of polygonal selections. Brush dynamics is the new addition in the options family, lets you play with size, opacity, pressure and velocity of brush strokes. But until recently, no one had really questioned about the safety features in Chrome. A post on ZDNet Open Source reports that an undisclosed company has asked all its employees to stop using Google Chrome and shift back to Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. The reason? They think that there are possible security holes in the browser.

I had actually read about a security threat in Chrome a few days back, which can be traced to its Webkit Engine. But I didn’t pay much attention to it as it was dependant on Java runtime and a bit of user intervention. But now since sun have released a Chrome compatible Java engine, the security threats have elevated. The hole can allow a java application to download an execute automatically (making it a good doorway for worms).

It would actually help to see that how many people will this flaw affect. From the traffic data of Sizlopedia, about 4% of total users use Google Chrome. That is significantly less than the number of users on Firefox or Internet Explorer. And out of that 4%, only a small percentage would actually have installed JRE on their systems. So the bottom line is, the security risk won’t affect masses even if malicious software target it.

Apple’s Safari also suffered from this same problem but it was addressed a few months back when they upgraded their version of WebKit. It would be actually interesting to see that how fast Google will respond to this issue as it appears to affect only a small number of the total users.

Google launched the Android Developer Challenge in January this year which saw some of the most innovative applications designed for the platform, but out of them all a few stood out from the crowd. These are most probably the applications that be used would most in day to day life. I am splitting the list into two categories for easy reference. This article will feature applications that add productivity to common tasks, while the next part will feature apps that bring fun into life.

CompareEverywhere

CompareEverywhere is a neat application that lets you scan a product bar-code from your camera and and get reviews, price comparisons, related products, and local retailers with driving directions.

You can order the selected products to be shipped as gifts as well as make and monitor wish lists.

Locale

This handy app changes your phone settings based on your location. For example, if your college is at 52 South Street, you can set specific settings when you are at that location, like your ringer to vibrate (I could really use this). Locale uses Google Maps API, and the touch screen interface to drag and drop location hot-spots. The app also presents ‘integration points’ for other applications, adding extensibility features.

Teradesk e-Storage

Teradesk is a virtual file storage and remote file access tool through which users can store files on the Teradesk Server and transfer them in encrypted form to and from the cellphone. Teradesk allows transfers of any size with pause control, resume and full recovery of broken transfers even if your battery life ends or your Internet connection crashes so there is almost no chance of data loss. LifeAware

Unlike other social networking apps, Life360’s aim is to help you overcome the troubles in life by alerting and requesting assistance from your surroundings. It uses the accelerometer to detect if you had an accident and instantly notify your family and friends about your location as well as your medical profile. You can also ask for support in case of other emergencies like fires or a runaway pet.

BreadCrumbz

BreadCrumbz is a fun new way of navigating using the GPS. In addition to traditional maps, you can also display and capture images along your route. Images are easier to recognize and remember and this technique also helps when trying to set navigation points for an indoor location. NavPoint images can be recorded with the camera, and the route can be geocoded and emailed to your friends with ease.

Fingerpaint

The Adobe CS4 Logo

This is an interesting concept of the logo developed by the Adobe team, and as you can see below, it kind of looks a bit unprofessional. I mean it doesn’t look right as the logo of the Premier Design product for design and development. And apparently, I am not the only one who dislikes the logo. Aral Balkan on his blog also voices his opinions about the new logo, and so do the commentators!

Verdict

Simple! A must have for designers, because apart from the logo, I do expect the Adobe Team to deliver fantastic products.

Before you give Explorer the boot, check out some first-rate add-ons that turns Windows’ tired file browser into the information manager of the future.

Explorer Breadcrumbs

If you’re using Windows XP, you may need a few add-ons to update that OS’s version of Explorer to match Vista’s file manager. An example is Vista’s “breadcrumb” style of displaying folder paths. Click any folder name in the path to navigate back to that folder instantly. Click one of the arrows separating folder names to see a pop-up menu of subfolders to navigate the other direction.

Explorer Breadcrumbs from Minimalist lets you add an Explorer toolbar with this same feature to Windows XP, 2003, or 2000. In Vista, breadcrumbs replace the previous path notation in the address bar (click to the right of the path to see and select the old style). But since Explorer Breadcrumbs simply adds a new toolbar, you can keep both path styles visible in your Explorer windows at once, if you wish.

Folder Size

Windows Explorer, by default, doesn’t show the size of the folder when you opt for the ‘Details’ view. This is one of the little things that users will find lacking in Windows Explorer. Well, this is when Folder Size comes in as a handy tool that adds the ‘Folder Size’ column to Windows Explorer Details View. Here’s the details column after installing Folder Size:

Total Copy

Total Copy is an improved version of Windows’ copy-function which copies slightly faster than Windows. With this app you can pause the copy-processes, and continue later. The best part of this app is that you can resume the copy process when you restart your PC. This is really helpful especially in case of power-loss or system-crash.

When you normally copy something in Windows, you drag the files from one folder to another using your left mouse button. If you drag the files using the right mouse button, you will get a menu like the one to the right. Now, select Total Copy here instead of Window’s Copy here.

QTTabBar

If your screen is cluttered with Explorer windows, consider replacing them with tabs similar to those in Internet Explorer 7. Giving your windows tabs would let you switch from one folder location to another with a single click or by pressing Ctrl, Tab. That’s the idea behind QTTabBar. It took me a while to figure out how to use the program to create a new tab. (One way is to right-click a tab and choose “Clone this”)

Once you get the hang of the tab-creation process, however, the program becomes very handy. In addition to the tab toolbar, you can show or hide a toolbar for managing the tabs themselves. Since all of that toolbar’s features are also found on the context menu for the tabs, you can save space by turning that option off and right-clicking the tabs instead.
