Discussing some features of the upcoming Wordpress 2.6 I highlighted that it will be making use of Google Gears. Sadly it was not meant for offline blogging rather to speed up file loading process in Wordpress.

The good news is that Wordpress.com users can already make use of this feature, now officially known as “Turbo”.

To enable it, login to your Wordpress.com blog dashboard and click the Turbo link on the position illustrated. It will prompt you to download Google Gears extension, allow it and you are good to go.

This will speed up administration file loading process to a huge extent as now all files will be loaded locally from your PC. Google Gears currently works on Firefox versions 2 & 3 and Internet Explorer versions 6 & 7 and Safari 3 support is coming soon.

Self hosted Wordpress users will be able to make use of this feature in the upcoming Wordpress 2.6

Today, June 17th 2008 is the official Firefox Download Day.

Almost a week ago I published some upcoming Features of Wordpress 2.6 which included Google Gears Support.

Including me, most of the other bloggers assumed that Google Gears support for Wordpress 2.6 means it will probably feature Offline Blogging however the assumption was quite wrong as revealed by blogger Amit at Digital Inspiration today.

Google Gears support is being added to Wordpress 2.6 for managed offline storage and not for offline blogging. This will improve the loading speed as all static admin interface content (images, css, javascript etc) will now be loaded locally instead of the web server on which the blog is hosted. More information on this feature can be tracked on Wordpress Trac.

This is still a very good new feature that will improve Wordpress performance but not having Offline Blogging support is a big turn off for some bloggers like me.

Today, on May 27th, one of my beloved and favorite blogging system turns 5. I have been using Wordpress for over almost 2 years now and since then it has rocked my world.

No other blogging system provides the ease of usability and flexible design choices such as Wordpress does and I am proud to say that my experience with Wordpress has so far been amazing and full of joy.

Recently I used Wordpress as a CMS to make my official University website and I was amazed to discover the wide range of functions it offers. Luckily my site got selected and for this I heartily thank Wordpress.

Congrats to Matt and all other Wordpress developers for keeping this great piece of software alive and healthy. To read articles related to Wordpress please visit our Wordpress category.

One thing I love about Wordpress is the great flexibility it offers in terms of designing custom themes and for this all the credit goes to Wordpress Template Tags.

Recently I ran into a problem where I wanted to monetize the posts in my Gadgets category with TTZmedia ads while keeping the normal Google Adsense ads on all other posts. This is when I found the in_category template function which lets you display category specific content in Wordpress.

The function is simple and very easy to use. Just use it in the Loop on any template file and it should work file.

<?php if ( in_category('category_id') ): ?>
// Some category specific PHP/HTML here
<?php endif; ?>

More detailed info and examples can be found on the link below:

http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/in_category

This can be helpful to monetize posts from certain categories with specific ads and can also be used to display information about a particular category.

A live implementation of this template function can be seen here on Sizlopedia. If you visit any post that belongs to the Gadgets category you will see targeted product ads while in other cases you will see the normal Google Adsense ads.

Its finally time to look forward to the next version of Wordpress i.e. Wordpress 2.6 as it will introduce some very interesting features and usability improvements.

Wordpress Expert has a good list of features in Wordpress 2.6 which I have summarized below.

Bookmarklet: Remember the Wordpress Bookmarklet? It is coming back to Wordpress in version 2.6 with a new and improved functionality.

Post Word Count: This feature is available for Wordpress.com users and has good chances of making into Wordpress 2.6 too.

Shift-Click Checkbox Selection: In Wordpress 2.6 you will be able to select a range of posts, comments etc using the Shift-Click hack.

Post Revisions: Wiki-style revisions management for blog posts.

Google Gears Support: Probably the most interesting feature yet is the Google Gears Support for Wordpress 2.6. This will enable users to write posts even in offline mode.

Identicons: Choose gravatars for those who don’t have one.

Wordpress 2.6 alpha Demo Site is up and can be accessed at the URL below:

http://wp.chrisjohnston.org/wp-admin/

To access the demo blog with administrator privileges use the username: admin and password: demo

As you will notice the UI has not been changed much but overall a lot of new features have been implemented.

Since Wordpress 2.5 a new security feature has been introduced which is known as the Wordpress Security Key. Most users don’t know the exact function of Seucurity Key and how to use it.

Below I have answered some of the frequently asked questions about Wordpress Seucirty Key which can help users with security of their blog.

What is Security Key?

It is a hashing salt that is not readable through the database or in more easy words the Wordpress Security Key is a unique phrase which causes better encryption of information stored in the user’s cookies.

Does Wordpress support Security Key?

Yes! as of Wordpress 2.5 and onwards, Wordpress now supports the use of a Security Key to make your blog more safe and secure.

Can I enable Security Key in versions prior to Wordpress 2.5?

No! this new optional entry was released with Wordpress 2.5 so there is no way to enable it in versions prior to Wordpress 2.5

Can Security Key be one of my Passwords?

Yes! but make sure its really long and very hard. Unless otherwise you would not only risk the security of your blog but also risk the security of your other online accounts which use the same password.

How can I generate a good and long Security Key?

Simply use the Wordpress Secret Key Generator.

Do I need to remember the Security Key?

Absolutely not! Its a random key and is used only to make the information stored in the user’s cookies more secure. You don’t need to remember it or write it down.

Where to put the Wordpress Security Key?

Once you have generated a Security Key using the Wordpress Secret Key Generator, open wp-config.php and paste it there.

I hope I am not exaggerating here but in my 2 years experience with Wordpress I must have used over a 100 different Wordpress plugins, each with unique feature and functionality but unfortunately none were focused on security. Wordpress is a very secure script but nevertheless there are always security loopholes which make ones blog vulnerable and open to remote attacks.

WP Security Scan is a Wordpress plugin that provides a lot of features based on security. The plugin scans your WordPress installation for security vulnerabilities and suggests corrective actions.

The security dashboard will also alert you if you need to upgrade your Wordpress version, if your MySQL database is vulnerable to remote attacks or if your htaccess file is not in the right directory and etc.

Currently it provides the following set of features:

Password Generator

File Permissions Scanner

Database Security Scanner

Version Hiding

Wordpress Admin Protection/Security

The plugin also lets you change your Wordpress table prefix in the MySQL database which prevents zero-day SQL Injection attacks. More new features are planned for the future version of plugin.

Click Here to download the plugin.

PS: I already took care of all the security vulnerabilities in Wordpress on Sizlopedia so if any Hacker is drooling watching the screenshot above better luck next time pal.

I just upgraded this blog to Wordpress 2.5 today and I can’t express the extent to which I was disappointed. The new admin theme is a total turn-off and the overall usability experience of Wordpress has taken a step backward instead of heading up in a new direction.

I was so much frustrated with the new Wordpress 2.5 color scheme that I had to Google in hope for finding a better admin theme plugin and to my surprise, Fluency admin theme was there all along to save me.

Fluency admin theme for Wordpress gives your blog admin panel a new look and design that is not the best but is still far more better than the default admin panel theme.

Its hard to imagine what made the Wordpress developers include the new admin theme while dumping the old one but I guess its something we should get used to now as this new admin theme is not going to change for long.

Fluency is a dark colored theme that arranges elements of your admin panel in a more organized manner. This also helps you concentrate more on writing as the theme gives your mind a peaceful sensation (which is highly needed while writing a new blog post)

If you have already upgraded to Wordpress 2.5 then you should definitely give this admin theme a try. To use this theme simply download, upload to plugins directory and activate it through the plugins manager.

Finally the full and final version of Wordpress 2.5 has been released and its time for an upgrade for all of the Wordpress users. Celebrating the release of this new version, the Wordpress creators have also redesigned Wordpress.org to match the look and feel of the new admin panel in Wordpress 2.5

Wordpress 2.5 has been on the roadmap for about 6 months and is latest stable release so far. The most noticable features in this version are: multi-file uploading, one-click plugin upgrades, built-in galleries, customizable dashboard, salted passwords and cookie encryption, media library, a WYSIWYG that doesn’t mess with your code, concurrent post editing protection and full-screen writing.

The new built-in galleries feature is something worth trying out. Users can make gallery out of the photos and images they upload by using a simple gallery function call in posts or pages. There are other goodies in Wordpress 2.5 for developers like inline documentation, database optimization and secure cookies.

Download and Upgrade to Wordpress 2.5

Download Wordpress 2.5 from here and if you are planning to upgrade to Wordpress 2.5 right away, use this Wordpress Upgrade Guide. As Matt indicates that there have been no significant changes in the database in this new release so all previous plugins should work fine and you are good to go for an instant upgrade.

Well! in case you haven’t heard about it already, Matt published a post 10 hours ago on the Wordpress Blog giving a sneak peek into the new Wordpress version and highlighting some of the new Wordpress 2.5 features.

The new Wordpress comes packed with a lot of new features and introduces a very odd-colored admin theme (Orange with Light blue). It is similar to the admin theme we saw on the Wordpress Demo Site which I highly disliked and so did most of the Wordpress fans.

For the users who think that the new admin theme is very much disappointing, they should take a look at the new features that Wordpress 2.5 has to offer. The new Dashboard is focused on the most relevant tasks at hand: a quick summary of what’s published and scheduled for publication, the latest comments and incoming links, blog stats, and WordPress updates and news. You can even add your own RSS feeds now, Wow!

The Wordpress navigation has been cut down to provide only the relevant options and task management options. The new Write page is the one that brings the most new features. Now there is a full-screen mode to ignore distractions while writing, live permalink view, Add media buttons and lots more.

One interesting feature is that you can not only share your own custom admin themes now but you can also switch back to the “classic” admin theme through the options thus getting rid of the terrible orange-blue.

Download the Wordpress 2.5 RC1 to try some of the new features and provide feedback. The final release is no more then a few days away.

I am sure that most of you who use Wordpress as their blogging CMS would have probably seen the Wordpress Bookmarklet at the bottom of their “Write Post” page.

The interesting fact is that almost all Wordpress users know or have seen the Wordpress Bookmarklet but only very few know its actual use. Today I decided to play with some of the hidden/less-known features of Wordpress and was amazed to find out that how beneficial the Wordpress Bookmarklet can really be.

It can be used for fast and easy posting and in case you use Wordpress as a microblogging platform then this is the best Wordpress treat you can ever have. Here is how to use it:

Under the “Wordpress Bookmarklet” section of your “Write Post” page, click and drag the link and save it on your bookmarks toolbar. Now whenever you visit a page that you want to blog about, simply highlight some text from the page and click the Wordpress Bookmarklet in your bookmarks toolbar (This will automatically copy the text and heading of the page to your Wordpress editor). Hit Publish and enjoy!

That saved your time and also helped you publish your article within a matter of seconds. I don’t know how many Wordpress users already know about this but it was a very interesting feature of Wordpress that I recently discovered.

Lately Wordpress creators decided to skip the release of Wordpress 2.4 which was due this February and instead planned to incorporate all of its features into the next release i.e. Wordpress 2.5. It is expected that Wordpress 2.5 will release somewhere in March but most of the bloggers are too restless to test out the new features.

To help bloggers overcome their emotions of curiosity, Chris Johnston has announced the availability of a public WordPress 2.5 Demo Site. The cool part is that it will host the most latest and up-to-date version of Wordpress 2.5 until its official release. This way developers and keen bloggers wouldn’t have to setup the alpha and beta releases on their localhost to test all of the new features, they can just use the online demo site instead.

To login as admin you will need to enter the following information:

Login: admin
Password: demo

This is what the new Wordpress 2.5 looks like

The new Wordpress has a sky-blue/orange color scheme. If you login to the demo site, you will notice a rearrangement of widgets and menus and a little bit of new features.

Personally I did not like the new interface at all except for the Post Editor which is a bit modified and more user-friendly. The color scheme is worse than the previous one. Plus you will see a rearrangement of information menus which looks just senseless and unattractive.

I hope they make it better before they plan to release it finally because I simply love Wordpress and I don’t want a reason not-to-upgrade.

Brute Force Password Cracking is a well-known password cracking/hijacking technique that is to used to get pass-through login forms etc by trying a huge number of possibilities in very less time. Back in the 2000’s the technique was widely used by brute forcers all over the world to easily hack into Yahoo/Microsoft email accounts but it was taken care of later on.

Unfortunately, Wordpress does not take care of this security loophole and anyone can access your Wordpress login form at www.MyWordpressBlog.com/wp-admin/

Once compromised and authenticated, using brute forcing techniques, a hacker can easily access all your posts, comments and blog data and then God knows what he might do to it. So for enhanced security it is recommended for every Wordpress user to use Login LockDown Wordpress Plugin.

This plugin records the IP address and timestamp of every failed WordPress login attempt. If more than a certain number of attempts are detected within a short period of time from the same IP range, then the login function is disabled for all requests from that range.

By default, the plugin will ban an IP from accessing the login form for 1 hour if it fails to authenticate itself more than 3 times within 5 minutes. However these settings can be changed easily.

Download Login LockDown

Installing the plugin is easy as upload, unzip and activate. Additionally take a look at the 3 tips to protect your Wordpress installation by Matt Cutts.

Honestly I have not been interested in Wordpress release updates lately because I was of the opinion that security flaws can not be dangerous for blogs but I had to change my opinion recently when I found out that a couple of blogs have been hacked as a result of the Wordpress security loop holes.

This means that there is a big group of hackers out there who are well aware of Wordpress security issues and target random blogs by hacking into the blog and deleting all the valuable data. The best way to prevent your blog from getting hacked is to keep the Wordpress version updated as the new versions always contains security fixes.

Wordpress 2.3.3 is an urgent security upgrade for Wordpress blogs that was released just a couple of hours ago. This release fixes a flaw in the xmlrpc.php file that would allow any valid user to edit posts of any other user on that blog by implementing a specially crafted request. Plus it fixes a lot of other minor bugs too.

To fix the security issue only you just need to download the fixed xmlrpc.php file and replace it with your existing xmlrpc.php file. Otherwise it is recommended to download the whole release from here.

There is also a special note for Wordpress users to not use the WP-Forum Plugin. WP-Forum Plugin is a famous Wordpress plugin that allows a user to create a Wordpress powered forum but some days ago WeblogToolsCollection pointed out a big security loop hole in this plugin which could harm Wordpress blogs.

So the short story is:

Upgrade to Wordpress 2.3.3

Remove/Not use WP-Forum Plugin

Lately a lot of people on the Internet seem to have been addicted to the very famous microblogging social network Twitter. On the other hand the hardcore bloggers still prefer to use Wordpress for its splendid blogging features and high functionality.

Following the enraging multi-trends of blogging, the guys at Automattic (the company behind Wordpress) decided to make a theme that would fulfill the needs of both Twitter and Wordpress users. So they came up with a Wordpress theme called Prologue.

Prologue is a special Wordpress theme created by Joseph Scott and Matt Thomas from the Automattic team. It can be imagined as a group Twitter that brings the very unique features and functionality of Twitter to Wordpress. Mathematically it is easy to understand:

Prologue = Twitter + Wordpress

Prologue Features

In Prologue each message can have comments (just like a blog post in regular Wordpress) and of course each comments thread has its own RSS feed.

Basically how it works is when someone has the ability to post to a blog they see a short form at the top of the home page with a post box and tags. There they can post short messages about what they’re doing. Below the posting box is a list of everyone’s latest tweet or message, with their Gravatar next to it.

Download Prologue for Wordpress

Prologue is available to the Wordpress.com users in their Presentations tab section. However if you plan to download it to use it on your self-hosted Wordpress blog, please use the link below.

Prologue for Wordpress.zip

Have you ever tried reading blogs on your mobile device? If yes then you would certainly be aware of the fact that blogs do not look the same on mobile browsers as they do on the PC because of the small screen size and low end settings.

Though the iPhone and iPod Touch offer a fully functional Safari Browser to surf the web but as I have experienced it myself on my iPod Touch I would say that reading Wordpress blogs on your Apple device is not a good idea. Therefore to make Wordpress blogs compatible for iPhone and iPod Touch the best option is to use iWPhone.

iWPhone is a Wordpress Plugin specially designed to make your blog iPhone and iPod TOuch compatible. It automatically reformats your blog’s content for optimized viewing on iPhone and iPod Touch. It detects the iPhone/iPod touch’s User Agent and serves up the content with the special theme only to iPhone and iPod touch visitors, all other browsers will view your WordPress blog with your current theme.

The plugin will soon support a new feature that will allow bloggers to write blog posts through iPhone and iPod Touch however currently this function is not supported.

Here are some of the key features of this plugin:

Formats your blog content for optimized viewing on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Automatically detects the iPhone/iPod touch’s Safari browser and only displays the custom theme to iPhone and iPod touch visitors, other visitors get your standard theme.

Simple iPhone/iPod-like theme with common interface elements that compliments the iPhone/iPod touch’s internal applications.

Images larger then 300 pixels wide are automatically scaled down to fit the iPhone/iPod touch optimized width.

It is highly recommended that if you own an iPhone or iPhone Touch and you are also a blogging addict (Like me) then you must install this plugin on your blog immediately.

Everyone likes to show off and of course there is no harm in it. As a new year gift, Matt gives us this new navy blue Wordpress Hoodies which is just amazing.

Well, if you are too tired of blogging around on Wordpress, just put on your Wordpress Hoodie and start wandering around your town streets. At least someone will figure out that you are a proud user of the Wordpress Blogging System.

No matter how hard you struggle to write a good quality and well versed post, the end decision lies in the hands of your readers to judge exactly how well the post really is.

You might have seen those star rating widgets on most of the blogs which allow readers to rate blog posts individually (on your blog or through your blog RSS). OutBrain offers one similar star rating widget plugin for Wordpress blogs and Feeds that will allow your blog readers to rate your articles.

Unlike other ratings widgets, this plugin does not show any logo and does not use any kind of link marketing strategy. It is free to use and very easy to install.

Get OutBrain Ratings widget for Wordpress

Unzip the wp_outbrain.zip file into your WordPress plugin directory.

In your WordPress admin site, go to the ‘Plugins’ page.

Activate the outbrain plugin.

Go to Options -> Outbrain and select your language.

Similarly you can allow your feed subscribers to rate your posts through an RSS reader using the OutBrain Feedflare. Just follow these steps to integrate the ratings widget to your blog Feed.

OutBrain Ratings widget for Feed Subscribers

Go to your FeedFlare dashboard (choose Optimize -> FeedFlare from the feedburner dashboard).

On the bottom of the select list there is a section called “Personal FeedFlare” with a text box.

There, paste the following URL: http://widgets.outbrain.com/FeedFlareUnit.xml and click “Add New Flare”.

Don’t forget to press “Save” at the bottom of the page.

The plugin works very clean and adds more to your blog design. I have currently enabled it on Sizlopedia so you can even check it out for yourself by rating this post

If you have a blog hosted on some other platform e.g. TypePad, Blogger etc then you can go to OutBrain directly and get the suitable ratings widget code for your blog.

Wordpress is a great content management system, much better than other web softwares of its kind available on the Internet. One of its great feature is the ability to have multi authors on a single blog. Previously the concept of multi authorship was not so popular and earlier content management systems did not support this idea. However, Wordpress gives us the ease to have as many authors as we desire on a blog.

All authors in Wordpress are treated as individual entities and their posts, comments, custom fields and categories are tracked along with them.

Usually when you transfer your blog you backup and export your MySQL database because it stores the data of all your posts, comments etc but what if you want to export the data of a particular author only?

This type of situation arises when an author plans to leave a multi authored blog (in order to start a new blog independently) and wants his share of posts. We can easily export the posts, comments, categories and custom fields data of that author using the Export feature of Wordpress which is often overlooked.

To export the posts of a particular author go to your Wordpress Admin Panel and navigate to Manage > Export. There you can choose the author and all posts, comments, categories etc of that author will be exported to your PC in XML format.

Now to Import this data to a new blog just follow the steps:

Log into that blog as an administrator.

Go to Manage > Import in the blog’s admin.

Choose “WordPress” from the list of importers.

Upload this file using the form provided on that page.

You will first be asked to map the authors in this export file to users on the blog. For each author, you may choose to map an existing user on the blog or to create a new user.

WordPress will then import each of the posts, comments, and categories contained in this file onto your blog.

This method can also be used to backup your blog without messing with the database.
