Though the bad part is that Apple is still requiring old iPod Touch owners to purchase the new firmware for $9.95 which is utterly evil. However following the following tips you might be able to upgrade from an old firmware to the latest 2.1 without even paying a penny.

Here is how it goes:

- Once your iPod Touch is on 2.0, open iTunes click update.
- This will automatically update your iPod Touch to 2.1 for Free.
The new iPod Touch 2.1 Firmware is free for users who have already upgraded their iPod Touch to 2.0. Users waiting to get their hands on the new iPod Touch 2nd Gen don't need to worry as it will be shipped with iPod Touch 2.1 out of the box.
This new firmware brings a million new bug fixes and takes care of problems such as keyboard tapping lag, slow updates from app store etc.
