As most of the iPod Touch owners would have discovered already, Apple has finally pushed the new iPod Touch 2.1 Firmware for download via iTunes.
Though the bad part is that Apple is still requiring old iPod Touch owners to purchase the new firmware for $9.95 which is utterly evil. However following the following tips you might be able to upgrade from an old firmware to the latest 2.1 without even paying a penny.

Here is how it goes:
- Follow our famous guide on How to Update iPod Touch to 2.0 for Free.
- Once your iPod Touch is on 2.0, open iTunes click update.
- This will automatically update your iPod Touch to 2.1 for Free.
The new iPod Touch 2.1 Firmware is free for users who have already upgraded their iPod Touch to 2.0. Users waiting to get their hands on the new iPod Touch 2nd Gen don’t need to worry as it will be shipped with iPod Touch 2.1 out of the box.
This new firmware brings a million new bug fixes and takes care of problems such as keyboard tapping lag, slow updates from app store etc.
The Jailbreak for this new firmware is not out or has not yet been tested. However, it will be posted here as soon as it is dicsovered. Watch out for links to the iPhone 2.1 Firmware being released tomorrow.

The 2.1 firmware for the iPod Touch has already been released!
i already have the 2.0 software installed but when i press update,a window pops up saying that 2.0 is the latest software update available
help?
Actually there’s a much easier way to do this. Simply download itunes 8.0. But be warned! Do not cancel once you have started this so make sure you have about an hour to and hour and a half to devote to this.
Once you plug in your ipod touch a pop up from itunes comes up saying that there is a new software update or something like that. Click download only. Itunes will atempt to backup your ipod and after like half a minute it will say it has failed. That’s okay, continue anyways. Wait for about 10 minutes and it will download. Itunes will probably like freeze or something. Close it or if that doesnt work just go to end task.
Then, open itunes(with ipod still in). Another popup should come asking you to update. Click update. Don’t be scared, it took me at least like 30 minutes to get the software downloaded. Resync your ipod. Voila! I dont know why apple hasnt caught on to this or maybe im stupid and it became free. W/e. Enjoy.
I have ipod touch 1.1.4 jailbroken
Do i have to unjailbreak it to download firmware 2.1?
Can you have iTunes 8 to do this?
Ty man
Hey Chris you have to update your itunes and the new firmware should appear.
and bunge you will have to jailbreak it again. it sometimes carries over installer and cydia but it doesn’t mean its jailbroken. the cydia and installer will not work the same. and there will most likely have a new and improved cydia and installer. check out my you tube vids. comment me and i’ll show you step by step. on how to jailbreak the new software.
