At PDC 2008, Microsoft discussed about the upcoming version of Microsoft Office where it revealed that the new Office will include browser-based web apps for some of its main applications such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc.
ReadWriteWeb points out that these web applications will be lightweight as compared to the full desktop applications but will also be feature-enrich making them comparable to other online office suites such as Zoho and Google Docs.
The web-version of Microsoft Office will be collectively known as the "Office Web Applications" and will be purely XHTML + AJAX based. Here you go with some previews.

Also the Office Web Applications will be compatible with all modern browsers such as IE, Firefox and Safari and won't require Silverlight or any ActiveX controls making them easily accessible to everyone.
A private technology preview for the Office Web Applications is expected later this year.

Its looks awesome. But what about Chrome? will it also be compatible?
Bravo to MS for not requiring Silverlight or ActiveX. I wonder how much the suite will cost though?
