How to Unlock iPhone 2.2 Firmware?

Ads

The new iPhone 2.2 firmware, which released a couple of days ago brings new eye-candy to the iPhone such as a Safari re-design, new notification icon for EDGE and other unique features such as Google Street View and Podcasts.

I was able to get my hands on the new firmware and managed to unlock and jailbreak it right away.

The method I will be sharing for unlocking the iPhone 2.2 firmware only works for iPhone 2G, however in one of my future posts I will be sharing a method to only jailbreak iPhone 3G for 2.2 firmware as the software unlock is still not close to reality.

All you have to do is download the new Pwned iPhone 2.2 firmware and restore it to your iPhone using iTunes. Here are the steps in detail.

  1. Download the Pwned iPhone 2.2 Firmware for iPhone 2G created using Pwnage tool (links provided at end of the post).
  2. Extract the parts such that you get a file named iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw (245MB).
  3. Connect your iPhone to your PC via USB cable and open iTunes 8 (Cancel if its asks you to update your iPhone to the latest firmware).
  4. Make a backup of all the contacts, music, videos and other media on your iPhone.
  5. Hold shift and click Restore and locate the Pwned iPhone 2.2 Firmware.
  6. Wait till its all done and enjoy an unlocked and jailbroken iPhone 2G on Firmware 2.2.

The benefit of this method is that you don't need to use any utility such as Pwnage or QuickPwn and works perfectly with iTunes on Mac or PC. Plus the jailbreak comes with Cydia and Installer both.

Download the iPhone 2.2 for 2G using the Rapidshare links below.

Good info and idea. But is it safe?

    • Robin

Hello I have done all the steps but at the end when Quickpwn is finished I put my Sim card I want to use in and it says different Sim card detected. However, my service is showing and I can make calls and receive, but the menu is locked. what can I do?

    • Rando

Thanks! This worked for me as well. I had used QuickPwn to unlock my 2.2 software but I was not getting any signal on AT&T (using a non-iPhone Sim and plan). After loading this, everything is working great.

  • tone

Is this unlock, activate, jailbreak the iPhone 2.2 1st Gen? With the original apple logo and with installer and cydia?

  • none

Hi, Can you make the third URL link work?
    Thanks

  • http://www.sizlopedia.com Dj Flush

@Tone, Yup! this will unlock, activate and jailbreak your iPhone 1st Gen with default Apple logo and Installer and Cydia.

@None, Thanks for notifying. I have fixed the third link.

  • abygail

This is really a good site. Thank you DjFlush.

  • http://ron8.org Ron

    Wow! Thanks it worked!

It looked a little suspicious at first but works great. Also you must ensure you have cracked your baseband before you upgrade. Mine was already jailbroken previously so it worked!

    Thanks again. You’re a star.

  • Dan

Thanks a lot, it really worked.

I use T-Mobile and I was scared of trying to update to 2.2 with my iPhone 2G. It is working fine, mine was also already Jailbroken.

    Thank you very much.

  • Phone 109

Wow!, this Helped me so much. Thanks a lot… Saved my time and working perfectly causing no issues or problems.

  • Sridhar

I wanted to unlock my 2G iPhone running on original 2.1 version. How important is to jailbreak the iPhone before upgrading to this pwwned 2.2 version.

I am downloading the IPSW files…but cant start unless someone confirms…

    Thanks!

I have a iPhone 3G firmware 2.2 by mistake, it works with T-mobile. I have a slim SIM.

    How to unlock it?

  • kevin

Life saver, unlocked and Jailbroken 1.1.2 to 2.2, thanks a lot works perfectly so far.

  • joey

there was an error 1600 when i tried to restore to iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw (245MB).

    • John

Don’t restore iPhone using Custom_Restore.ipsw if your just upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2 . It needs to restore your backup from iTunes to load properly.

I tried using Custom_restore on my first attempt and it couldn’t find the Sim card (Rogers) and had all kinds of errors. When I went back and restored my backup in iTunes, it loaded all data and music properly…

  • zaynos

Excellet, works really great. I’m gonna bookmarek this page.

  • Sam

I did download the files but how do I join them…

  • paul martin

If you have upgraded to 2.2 via Apple then the only solution is to use the any-network card which came out last Thursday.

  • http://www.sizlopedia.com Dj Flush

    @Sam

You don’t need to join the files together after download, rather just extract them.

If you are on Windows, use WinRAR provided by Rarlabs.com and if you are on a Mac, use UnRAR provided at Unrarx.com.

Both the extraction utilities are free to use.

  • tone

Keep getting error! I download the 3 file and how to put them 2gether.

  • rob

I get error 1604 after a while and it didn’t work. Any idea on what is going on?

  • Subarusam

    Fantastic !!
Thank you for such a simple method. I have updated my iPhone to 2.2 tonight, and the whole process worked flawlessly (although it does take quite a while to carry out the process.)
It’s so good that you provide such a foolproof upgrade system – and I’m not a “techie”.
Any chance of a similar process to upgrade my iTouch, please ?

  • DjDj

Hi, is this works with iphone 3g – Tmobile?

  • charly6

Can some one upload to mediafire or somewhere else this files Please.!!

    thanks

I have a first generation iPhone and I am traveling to Europe (Italy) for several weeks so I thought it would be a good idea to unlock my iPhone and use a local SIM card when in Europe. I have firmware 2.2 (5G77), and my understanding is that if I unlock the phone I will lose the visual voicemail from AT&T (makes sense). My question is, can I reinstall the official firmware once I am back from Europe and be back where I started without any problems? Thanks for the help.

  • Matic

This might be a dumb Question but I’m a novice at this phone hacking game so please excuse me. Anyhow, coming from 1.1.4 firmware, do I have to download and/or purchase the 2.2 firmware before implementing this method? Or does this method actually upgrade my firmware directly to 2.2 with no issue?

  • mick

i tried this and got an error 106 i think it was. just wondering how i am able to unlock this phone

  • zaynos

DJ Flush, it works just fine, but do you know why I cannot sync any movie?? It syncs contacts nad photos, but not any apps or movies (I didn’t try music sync). Please help me.

  • Sachin

I was using unlocked version. When I plucked in the iPhone to laptop. It asked me if I wanted to upgrade to Firmware 2.2 and I said yes. I did not know the consequence.. Now my phone is locked. I get incoming calls but unable to navigate to main screen. Will you method work for unlocking my phone.

    • Sqasrini

I too have faced the same problem as Sachin – upgraded to firmware 2.2 and iphone got locked. Now unable to even restore to old. Please help to unlock this.

  • Chris W

Thank you for the wonderful jailbroken firmware. Works flawlessly!

  • Satya

I have locked iPhone 2G (ver 2.2) with AT&T. I want to unlock this one as I am planning to upgrade to 3g. This phone will be used my brother as he is in t-mobile so I need to unlock it.

Does the above process works or I need to do something else?

    • SAM

Satya, did you get the answer to your question? I am interested to know.
      Thanks in advance.

My just got my iphone 2g from ebay. Ungraded to the legit 2.2 firmware with itune 8.02 with itune, but with this custom restore loaded on my iphone. It is unlocked and did the bandwidth hacked too. My phone wasn’t jailbreaked at 2.2 before I loaded this.

    It is golden now.

Nevermind! I just tested onther SIM card and it worked fine! My Sim Card died during the process, i’ll ask for a new one. Thank you!

    Hi,

    Just a couple of questions:

    - I have been using my iPhone with AT&T in the US w/no problems. I am going to move to Singapore soon, so once I unlock it using this method, I’ll be able to use it with a sim in Singapore?

    - Does this unlock delete everything from the phone and do a factory restore? I have a lot of text messages (SMS’s) on my phone that I don’t want to lose. Any way to store them elsewhere?

This look like a fantastic tool. Can’t wait to use it.

    Many THanks,

  • Ben C

Ditto Jos Batist. I “upgraded” to 2.2 firmware on my 3g iphone, and now my tmobile service won’t work. Very frustrating, wasn’t even thinking when I did it, and now I hate Apple. Was working fine before with an ismartphone sim chip.

  • Jeff

Wow, the easiest way to upgrade to version 2.2 that I’ve seen. Many thanks for the info … worked great.

  • Dave

    Dj Flush,

I downloaded and extracted the files without a hitch, but when I connect to iTunes and hold Shift while clicking Restore, it asks if I want to backup my files before restore. When I click no, it begins the restore saying it is extracting files. It does not give me the option of selecting which version I want to restore to. I have the original iPhone and it has been jailbroke and unlocked to 2.1. What do I need to do to be able to select iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw for the restore. Also you mentioned that this file is 245MB, after downloading and extracting, mine is 239MB – is that a problem?

    Thanks for the response,

    Dave

  • Dave

Disregard the previous email – I’m using an iMac and the Shift is replaced by the alt/option key. Everything worked great and the iPhone is now running 2.2. Thanks for posting these instructions and links.

I was trying to unlock and activate an Iphone using your method but it gives me an error 21. The phone hasn’t been unlocked or jailbroken. Can you help me see what I need to do.

    Thank you! It worked!
At first I thought it didn’t cause it was stuck on the “connect to iTunes” screen but by actually disconnecting the iPhone, the process gets to finish restoring.
    Thank you!

What does “you must ensure you have cracked your baseband before you upgrade.” means? Does it mean, it has to be jailbroken before loading this custom firmware?

I’ve followed everything precisely, but when I try to extract the folder called iPhone1,1-2 it won’t read in UnRarX. I thought that maybe I should try changing the extension for the folder to .rar, but then when UnRarX did read it, it said that there was nothing to extract because it wasn’t a .rar file. Could you please help? I’m working on a mac, and this is proving to be much more frusterating than it needs to be! Thanks though for your help! This will be really great if it does work.

    Hey Dj Flush,
Have a problem with my iphone 1.1 these days, I’m unable to use the camera, whenever I want to use the camera of my iphone, it says that there is not enough memory and asks me to delete some pictures. I have deleted all the pictures and songs from my phone but i’m still unable to open my camera. Can you or anyone help me with this problem.
    Would really be appreciated.

  • D. Cook

I really appreciate your work on this topic.

I have a 2G iPhone that was unlocked and Jailbroken running 1.1.4. I downloaded iTunes 8.02 and ended up with a locked iPhone with 2.2 on it…

I used your files above and everything went smoothly and it started its restore process with the Apple sign only on the screen (no progress bar). After a few minutes it stopped and came up with the Error 1604 “iPhone could not be restored” . I tried it again but it didn’t help. Now the phone will not turn off and keeps cycling between the Apple screen and the one that shows the CD music symbol and the USB and does not respond to any of the buttons.

    I need some help!

    Thanks again,

  • SAM

Does this method work with a 2G iPhone running the official 2.2 firmware that had never been unloocked/jailbreaked before?

If not what method you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for anyhelp on this.

    • Age

Yeap. I just got my mod. Work like a charm!!

      • SAM

I confirm. I also applied this method to an iPhone (2G) running the official 2.2 firmware. It is now unlocked and jailbroken iPhone and is working great.

Awesome method to unlock the iPhone. If we can get these restore files for all future versions, no need to run any more Pwange or Ziphone tools ever.

    DJ Flush,

I had a working iPhone 2G 1.1.2 which was Jailbroken and activated. I used an iClarified software on the iPhone to unlock it. This evening I decided to upgrade it using iTunes to 2.2.

My iPhone is now asking me to put a valid Sim card so that I can activate. Can you tell me how to either get back to 1.1.2 or get around the activation.

    Thanks.

What about the iPhone 3G. I’ve locked my iphone 3G after updating to firmware 2.2 and I was using Turbo Sim here in Pakistan. I’ve two question dear DJ Flush:

    a) When iPhone Dev Team is probable to announce the crack (unlocking+jailbreaking) of firmware 2.2 for iPhone 3G?

    b) The new Turbo Sim cards which claim to work fine with 2.2 on iPhone 3G are reliable are really working?

    Thanks much Hamid.

  • Dan

Thanks so much for the software, I’m not a techie but managed to update hassle free using my Macbook and iPhone 2G 1.1.4. Remember that instead of shift you use the Alt Option button!

  • Gus

Hello…I have an OTB 1.1.2 Jailbroken and unlocked with TurboSim….I want to upgrade to version 2.2. Will this file work in this case? Will I have a Jailbroken and unlocked iPhone after following the steps? I just want to make sure before doing it. Thanks

  • Ajit

Hey I like this idea, but when I try to restore through iTunes, I keep getting Error code 5. Why is that? Please help.

will this firmware also activate the iPhone too?

  • Captain

    Hi folks

Just want to say that I’ve just upgraded a 2G to 2.2 using the information above. It worked a treat.

    Thanks alot guys

  • Neil

Update! I have successfully performed the operation! Google searched the QuickPwn utility and Jailbroken my iPhone first then ran the custom firmware and it work like a charm, put my Tmoblie Sim in and all is working fine. No app issues as of yet will post any other issues if I find them. Jailbreaking was pretty easy it is a step by step process.

    Good luck!

  • http://www.sizlopedia.com Saad Hamid

Just to let you guys know that the Unlock tutorial explained here still works for all iPhone 2G.

    • ceizeley

can you please suggest of other way to download/retrieve/get copy of the files? thanks!

  • Neil Wheeler

I don’t know why but I could never get the firmware to load before I jailbroke the phone first, I kept getting 1604 errors. I downloaded QuickPWN and performed that operation and then the firmware loaded without any errors and the iphone is working beautifully on T-Mobile. I know the instructions stated you didn’t have to jailbreak first but I could never get it to work simply by loading the firmware file only. I tried on several PC’s and reloaded itunes several times and used different versions. I would like to thank Saad for posting the firmware my wife loves her new iPhone!!!!!!!

I have an issue with this :(

i went from a 1.1.5 jailbroke and all to this but now none of my sims are working.

    any help please?

My phone was previously unlocked with T-Mobile and I am currently using 2.0 (first gen)

  • Joel

Thank you so much for this information! Way easier than QuickPwn that I used on my 3G.

One issue however. It says “No Service” after I did this, I have restored twice, and have been searching like crazy. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this?

? How is it possible to download 3 seperate files, then extract them and then only have 1 file. Makes no sense. How to you get 3 different files into 1 file?

Actually when do extract the files, they have the same name, so you either stop or replace the file you just extracted.

    This must be a scam.

The 2nd and the 3rd say there not found what should I do??

If you are lucky, you will get all your contacts back.

I have a question. I have an unlock jailbroken Iphone with fw ver 2.1 that I use with T-mobile. If i follow these steps, will it update it to the fw ver2.2 and still allow me to use my Iphone with T-mobile?

        Thanks

  • Narayan

Thanks very much. Worked beautifully and am delighted that I am able to access the AppStore. The upgrade process did have a couple of hairy moments. I hope others find these comments useful:
    1. I use a Mac and had some difficulty unzipping a .rar file. Finally used Stuffit Expander found on cnet.com downloads free, worked great.

    2. The .rar expand kept “hanging” even after using Stuffit. It was not obvious but the expander was looking for Part 2 and Part 3 of the zipped file. Users need to download all three parts from the 3 links above, store in the same folder and then run Stuffit Expander. The Expander unzips the file to the same folder as the zipped files.

    3. After unzipping the file, if using a Mac, use the Alt/Option Key instead of Shift when doing the Restore.

    4. After the upgrade and verification, my phone (which was originally running ver 1.14 unlocked version) seemed to “hang”. I just saw the white Apple logo on a black background and nothing seemed to happen. I unplugged the phone from the cable and reconnected it and everything seemed to revert to normal again

    Thanks again DJFlush.
