In a race to save the declining market share for Windows Mobile by providing more features to the users, Microsoft is getting ready to release a cloud storage service for phones called Microsoft My Phone which shall provide synchronization and backup features for users bearing a Windows Mobile phone.
Later today, Microsoft accidentally pre-launched the service on the domain Getskybox.com but then took it down almost immediately.
As reported by some users who seem to have witnessed the service while it was up, Microsoft My Phone aims to provide a secure platform to backup all information on ones mobile and will also allow a user to upload photos directly from his/her mobile device and share with friends or family.
Microsoft My Phone shall provide 200MB of free storage to each individual account and will also support automatic synchronization. Interesting thing to note here is that the name of the service is quite different to the domain name and also that Getskybox.com seems to be owned by some individual rather than Microsoft (Check the Whois record).
Rumors suggest that Microsoft is planning to officially release the My Phone cloud storage service at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Update: Microsoft My Phone website has been revealed officially and the service will be available soon (probably after Mobile World Congress 2009).
