Bing’s Homepage Targeting Chrome/Firefox Users for Internet Explorer 8

Ads

When Google launched their super-fast, simple and now super-popular browser Chrome, they used Google.com (+ all local domains like Google.com.in/.pk etc) to advertise it. Microsoft is now using similar tactics with their decision-engine Bing for raising awareness about Internet Explorer 8.

Go to Bing.com right now with either Firefox/Chrome and you'll see a "Fast. Easy. Get Internet Explorer 8" banner at the top right. Clicking on the link takes you to a download page which tells how Internet Explorer 8 is optimized for Bing.

This does not work under Apple's Safari browser. Reason being: Safari is mostly used on Macs where Internet Explorer 8 simply does not exist (it was discontinued after version 5.2.3).

When Google started promoting Chrome on their homepage, users objected to this and said that it was unethical. Well, it really isn't: Microsoft and Google are both just using their very own product (Bing and Google Search respectively) to promote another of their own products (IE8 and Chrome, respectively). It relates to the company and is helpful, rather than unethical or immoral.
