There is one thing that made Mark Zuckerberg Time Magazine’s Person of the Year as well as the youngest billionaire on earth that is Facebook, the mammoth social network that caters to more than 500 million users worldwide. The rapid growth of Facebook is evident, and now Facebook is the third largest website in the world as it takes over the No. 3 spot from Yahoo, says comScore.

So according to the figures presented by comScore, Facebook had an estimated number of 648 million unique visitors from across the globe in just November, 2010 as compared to the 630 million visitors that Yahoo got. However, in the previous month, October, Facebook and Yahoo were head to head with an even 633 million worldwide unique visitors each, nevertheless Facebook had already surpassed Yahoo with half a million more visitors in October itself.

Facebook now enjoys the position of the No.3 website in the world, just behind Microsoft which gets 869 million worldwide visitors and the internet search giant Google which receives 970 million visitors, to retain the No.1 spot.

This overthrow does not come as a shocker, as we have already seen how Facebook accounts for 25% of pageviews in the US, while just 18 months ago, Facebook had become the fourth largest website on the internet. So Facebook getting ahead of Yahoo does not surprise as it could have easily been foretold, and only just recently, Facebook also took over Yahoo to become the second largest video site in the U.S.

Things in the U.S are different as Facebook is still No. 4 in terms of total monthly visitors, which Yahoo is No.1 with each getting 152 and 181 million monthly visitors respectively. So Yahoo does still have the upper hand in one region. No doubt Facebook is a tough competitor for Yahoo, we’ll just have to wait and see how things turn out to be for both of these companies.
